I'm thinking about buying some chrome 18" rims for my car, but live in a bad neighborhood. My uncle said he has heard of people getting insurance on them, how would I go about doing this.

Typically we see younger drivers come in with an older auto that may be worth a couple thousand dollars and they put $4,000-$6,000 worth of rims and tires on the car.

The insurance company will normally charge 12-15% of the value for the "custom equipment" - but keep in mind, if the car is stolen and the rims are gone when they locate it, they will probably TOTAL the car!

If you choose NOT to pay the additional premium for the custom equipment, kep in mind, when they are stolen, the insurance company will replace your wheels with factory style equipment and/or hub caps!

Just call your insurance agent and he should be able to tell you right away as to how much it will cost. If he can't, just find you a local independent agent. Look for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and they should be able to help you get properly insured.

GOod luck and I hope this helps!

why would you put nice rims on your car if you live in a bad neighborhood?

you may as well place the cash on the dash and wait till someone breaks in to take it... this way all you have to pay for is a window.

ask your agent if you even need to put an endorsement on the policy for the rims. 18" rims are not worth that much money and may not charge you more for the coverage.

make sure you have the receipts and photos of the vehicle before it gets stolen, which we all know it will...

USAA is a preimum company and will not likely deny coverage on added items. However, you will NOT be reinbursed dollar for dollar for the extras. If your car isn't recovered then you will most likely not be paid much extra for the so called 'improvements' you made to the vehicle. Customizing actually narrows the market appeal for an automobile, therefore it is technically worth LESS than a stock unit. The best way to tell what's covered is simply to read your policy.

Well, you'd have to attach the rims to the car. Then, you call the agent/company, and advise them you have some "customized equipment" you need to add to the policy.

If you want the equipment covered for collision, you also need to carry collision on the whole car - then you add "$200 customizing equipment" to the collision. Same for theft.

You can't insure the rims, if you don't have the rest of the car insured - and you can't insure any parts not attached to the car.

MOST FULL COVERAGE INSURANCE COMES WITH AN ADDITIONAL (ADD ON COVERAGE) OF EITHER $1000. $500 , ETC. CALL YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY ANS SEE HOW MUCH ADD ON COVERAGE DOES IT HAVE.
EXAMPLE, IF IT COMES WITH $1000 AND YOUR RIMS COST $1500 THEN YOU WILL ONLY NEED TO INSURE THEY ADDITIONAL $500.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PROOF OF THE ACTUAL COST, SO KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS AS SOME COMPANIES MAY WANT A COPY OF IT,

GOOD LUCK,

You need to obtain a "rider policy". This covers extras installed on vehicles. It's an extra cost and you will need the receipts for proving the amount of purchase.

Just ask the insurance agent of your car to include it in the clause. You can even include "acts of God", that is damage due to storm, hail, an the like.
