no...there is not one bit of truth to that "myth". using low weight with high reps does not "tone" muscle. that is one of the most inaccurate pieces of information spread regarding resistance training.

the intensity at which exercise is performed at dictates the increase in the metabolic rate after exercise, where the real fat burning takes place. too many people attempt to focus on fat burning during the actual exercise session which is a waste of time. training at a high level of intensity in resistance training means basically using heavy loads close to 80% of the maximum in that exercise. when these heavy loads are used the body must utilize muscle glycogen as the primary source of fuel. fatty acids can not be converted to energy at a high enough rate to keep up with energy demands. when the body uses glucose during exercise it will switch to using a greater than normal amount of fatty acids after exercise. you also want to limit the time that you wait between sets. you want to lift heavy with about 60-90 seconds rest between sets. at the conclusion of your training session you want to be panting heavily. to the point where you can not easily hold a normal conversation. when you exercise at this level of intensity the body must utilize excess oxygen to restore the body to the pre-exercise state. this is called the excess postexercise oxygen comsuption or EPOC. as the body consumes more oxygen to restore itself the metabolic rate is increased, this means more fatty acids are utilized for energy. it can take several hours for the body to restore itself to the pre-exercise state. training at maximum effort is bar far the most optimum method of increasing the metabolism and reducing body fat levels. this is exactly why elite sprinters have 3-4% lower body fat with more muscle mass than every other elite athlete. training at a high level of intensity not only increases the metabolic rate more but it also causes the greatest increase in growth hormone secretion. GH is the most powerful fat burning substance that the human body produces.

training with light weights and high reps does not increase the EPOC or increase growth hormone output, it is far from optimum.

Tearing muscle tissue builds scar tissue, no longer muscle, and will weaken the muscle tissue. You must no longer be workout to the factor of acute anguish. If you wish to construct muscle, each different day is OK, however in the event you overdo the anguish bit, you must permit the muscle tissue relaxation or deliver them an effortless exercise.
