Write your cover letter in the body of of your email, and attach your resume. Application letter only serve as an introduction for them to be wanting to read your resume. It used to be sent as an attachment, but with the spread of email, it is now better to have it as the body of your email.

I do not agree with any of the answers given. The resume should NEVER be sent as an attachment nor should an application. You should send the cover and anything else in the body of the email. If a company or the person is really interested in you, they will read the entire email.
The company I work for with automatically delete any attachment because of viruses.
Most companies will direct you to a web site to fill out an application

Either way. The ones I've received have usually, but not always, had the cover letter in the body of the email, and the resume as an attachment.

you can send your cover letter by email, but frankly, I've never even gotten an interview e-mailing my resume. I believe in the old fashioned resume in snail mail.
