500 watts at what voltage? your question doesn't make it clear. however, even without knowing the voltage of your power supply... you should not leave either of these exposed. both can cause you harm and if mis-handled or damaged can easily start a car fire. both have a great potential to hurt you or your stuff. 12 volts can "tickle" like some others have said her but at the potential a working car battery has it can be deadly (remember, i said CAN) i have been "tickled" by car batteries and other dangerous voltages and luckily i am stiil here to type answers on yahoo. check your wires carefully and if you aren't sure check with a your local car audio pro shop to be sure your all set and safe.

It depends on the voltage of the power supply. 12V IS NOT enough to physically harm a person in ANY WAY. The resistance of the human body is extremely large, and 12V is nothing. The 'tongue' trick is just water in your mouth lowering your body's resistance, and the distance of the resistance (being your tongue) is still a large number!!!
A car battery is capable of producing hundreds of amps of power, but at only 12V.... SSSsssooooooooo what is the voltage of the 500W power supply???? If it is a higher voltage than 12V, then the power supply would be more dangerous.

It will be the exposed leads in a 500w power supply. This generates 2.083amps which is enough to kill you.You will just get a jolt from the car battery.

Depends on what voltage the 500W item is using. It's the current (amps) which causes the problem, so any car 12V battery (300A min) being shorted will cause melting wires and/or a fire.
