I hate to tell you that your trans is in fail safe when it starts in 2nd gear. Many times the bushing in the trans end of the shift cable wears out check for slack engine off with some one moving the shifter while you watch cable to lever movement. The throttle cable to trans is the Kick Down Cable OR TV throttle valve cable. It raises the line pressure to down shift or Hold the gear longer. Neither one is your problem however 88 max has a Governor that could be a problem. My best guess based on many years at Nissan is you need to find an obsolete gear box and replace the trans. For more than the car is worth when you sell it. OR put the 20 year old car out to pasture and GO CAR SHOPPING! boy you will be in for a surprise! Basic cars sell for $20,000 or more. Do it quick the Dollar is falling against other world currency. So what you buy today will cost even more 6 months from now.
