Consider the oft quoted segment by Karl Marx; which says in part --"....religion is the opium of the masses...." One way to consider this idea is to view religion as one of the historical means of population control by those who make their living in the control and conformation (directing) of other people.
Those who claim that religions and states are, or ever have been, separate are either ill informed or delusional in their reading and assessment of human history.

Mr Tony Blair and Mr Bush have proved that there is an enormous religious undertone in their governments, though, they made unacceptable claims to secularism.

You have not shared your own views on religion and so I do not know what you know and what you do not know.
But please think on this. Christians believe that Jesus was the greatest man that ever lived and therefore could have achieved anything he set his mind on in this world. Yet when he was asked by the Roman Governor, Pilot, if he were a King Jesus answered him saying,
“My kingdom is no part of this world. If my kingdom were part of this world, my attendants would have fought that I should not be delivered up to the Jews. But, as it is, my kingdom is not from this source.”
John 18 v 36
If religious leaders of Christendom believe the teachings of the Christ, as they profess to, then it should be clear to them that integration with the governments of this world is not only wrong but is actually working against the teachings of the man they profess to follow.

The state or government has separate governance in one country from the governance of any religion. One can be appointed to the goverment position although he is an active member of one religious organization provided he will not mixed his government functions with the religious functions. and that is called the separation of powers between government and religion.

This is a man who said he didn't talk about his faith in case people thought he was a bit nuts. Well that's my respect gone. I expect many people of the faith or secular would say that fence sitting is not the trait of a strong man.
I think the govenment would benifit strongly by going back to faith in God.
