Am I wrong to feed wild birds and whe I go away in the winter for a couple of weeks, will they still expect food or will they realise they have to get their own?

Yes I love seeing them to. I have one robin who waits for me. I can't seem to keep a feeder because the squirrels break them.
Thank you all so much for your comments.
I will have to try some of the things you suggested.

I feed them all the time, so do others around me. They do get used to the feed. They also know where else to get it, either another feeder or woods. I love to see the different birds. I wish that bird seed wasn't so expensive!

I have been feeding garden birds for years but am responsible about it as a surplus of food could encourage vermin and also get rotten and harm the birds. Get squirrel proof feeders as this will deter them from the feeders and less mess will be created underneath. Do not refill the feeders until all dropped seed has been cleared. Have fun and be sure to keep your camera nearby.

Some birds travel a long way to a regular food source and lose a lot of body weight in doing so, if there is no food available and none close by it can be detrimental to their wellbeing. So try to have a neighbour put some out for you.

Don't stop feeding... they will still waste valuable energy looking, plus you may find some species don't come back when you begin again. Try getting a huge feeder, and a friend to fill it up every few days, and maybe some fat balls.

Wild birds develop the expectation and dependency of finding food in certain places.

It's not wrong to feed them.If your gone in the winter you should put up some more birdfeeders or tell a neighbor to help. they probably won't know and still exspect some food. But if they notice you not comming for a couple of days they might go somewhere else.
