When a soldier gets a honorable discharge out of the military. How long do they have to service in order to keep their benefits?

To keep benefits in the millitary, you would have to retire in 20 years.
If injured and get a medical retirement, VA usually raises the percentage allowed after medical retirement.

If the discharge is for simply completing their terms of enlistment and not for retirement, then they can keep their SLGI insurance (but must pay premiums).
They are entitled to VA medical benefits. however, these are limited and do not cover eyes, dental, or hearing.
VA backed home mortgage.
If they have received a VA rating of 100% total and permanent disability, then their are a lot more benefits.
Monthly compensation
Full medical coverage for everything
Vocational Rehabilitation. This includes college, business equipment, etc. Also made available to spouses and children in certain cases.
Access to any and all military bases and facilities.
Property tax benefits (varies by state to state). Florida vets pay no property taxes on their home.
If spouse is on Medicare, then spouse is covered 100% for all medical and prescription drugs.
As far as college benefits, they have changed and I can't give you an honest answer on that.

If they are injured then they usually will be able to use VA for medical and possibly other base benefits as well. With honorable discharge they will also have the GI Bill to use to go to college.

depends on the type of bennies. VA Loans and the GI Bill, for instance, only need to have served 3 years. medical bennies: must have retired or received medical disability as scored by the VA. Pretty much everything else( MWR./Commissary/Exchange): must have retired with at least 20 years service.

thats a little complicated, but ill skim across the top, minimum 20 years active duty to retire with benefits.

All ex military get one of those cards that give them discounts on certain thins.. i think!
