If the dog you loved so much was injured and bleeding, would you know what to do? Would you know what to look for if he were bleeding internally? Yes, the sight of blood makes some of us queasy, but there comes a time when you have to put your own comfort aside if you are going to save a life. Sometimes there isn't any time to think and you have to react quickly. There are two types of bleeding; external and internal. External bleeding is the result of a wound to the surface of the body like a cut or a scratch. Internal bleeding is when the inside of the body is suffering from a wound that is bleeding into the body.
External bleeding is the easiest to notice. Generally, you'll need to stop the flow of blood from the wound to prevent excessive blood loss and possible shock. In most situations, applying firm and steady pressure to the wound is enough to slow the flow of blood to give a dog a chance of survival. An easy way to apply pressure properly is to cover the wound with a thick cloth or gauze bandage while using a hand to press the bandage to the area. When the cloth over the wound soaks up too much blood, don't remove it, but instead apply a new one on top of the old one. Under no conditions should you try to wipe away blood that's welled up over the wound. Excess blood is in the process of forming a clot that will naturally stop the wound from bleeding. The application of a bandage won't hinder the clotting process but wiping the blood away will.
If a simple bandage doesn't do the job to slow bleeding, try elevating the open wound if the dog was hurt on a limb. A pillow, rolled-up blanket, or a cushion placed between a dog's legs can all be used to elevate a wounded limb, but raise only slightly before applying direct pressure to the wound. However, if there's a chance that a bone might be broken, elevating a wound is a very serious mistake.
Should direct pressure and elevation fail to slow the flow of blood after one to two minutes or be an option to avoid (in the case of a possible bone fracture), you should consider applying pressure to a pressure point (points of the body where major arteries are close enough to the skin's surface to be touched). There are nine such pressure points on a dog's body: Four pairs in the legs and a fifth in the tail. The first pair are on the front legs of the dog, inside the upper area immediately above the elbow. The second pair of pressure points is in the back legs of the dog, inside the thigh at the spot where the leg meets the body. The third pair is in the front feet of the dog, inside the lower leg and just above the paw. The fourth pair is in the back foot, at the front of the back leg just above the paw. The final pressure point is on the underside of the tail.
The use of a tourniquet should be a last resort, used only if all of the methods listed above fail. Even then, a tourniquet should be used with the utmost care to avoid stopping the flow of blood to a limb entirely. Any strip of cloth or gauze (though elastic bands or drawstrings may also be used if necessary) can be used as a tourniquet. Tourniquets are tied above the wound and tightened by hand, but they should be released every 10 to 15 minutes to allow some blood to flow into the limb.
Internal bleeding is much, much trickier to detect. Whenever a dog suffers excessive physical trauma but no blood is seen, the dog should still be examined by a veterinarian for internal bleeding. Shock can also result from internal bleeding, so look for rapid but weakened breathing, cold extremities, and a rapid but weak heartbeat, as they're all signs of shock.
As with all serious injuries, you should seek out professional help immediately, especially if you suspect broken bones, internal bleeding or if there's something stuck in the wound. First aid is only a temporary solution to stabilize the situation until a veterinarian can apply proper treatment. By doing what you can before the professionals arrive, you are giving your dog a fighting chance to survive.

dogs don't have periods but they do go into heat.
Unlike people it's at this time that they can become pregnant.
You can spay her when she is in heat however due to the blood vessels being enlarged it gets more expensive.
A heat last 21 days and tehy usually bleed for 1 week then it gets really light for a week and then more bleeding as they come out.
My suggestion is have her checked by a vet to be sure that it's a heat. and set up a spay in about 5 weeks. A dog goes into heat about every 6 months.
I would also suggest after she's spayed to have her go to a dog obedience class.
Vets charge different prices so the best is to call around and see which one is best for you..Just and example I have a male cat that needs to be fixed and I've caled around and there are 5 vets in my area and the quotes given to me is as low as $35 and upto $165 so call around.
Also call teh shelter you got your dog from there is a good chance they can help withthe spaying most work with vets that will do discount spaying.

Wow every 2nd answerer asked what the question was, they obviously have no idea what a question is to miss that! The girl asked why she looks 5 months pregnant instead of 7, is it to do with her age and size? Anyway, every pregnancy is different, some people show more than others, it just depends on your body, so yeah in a way it's to do with your height and weight, i doubt it's anything to do with your age though.

All female dogs will go into their first heat cycle 6mo to 1yr old, and continue to have then about every 6 months until they get old or spayed. The bigger the dog, the more blood they will bleed. I have a Weimaraner and a Doberman Pinscher. Both will bleed for about 3-4 weeks every 6 months. and yes ALOT! Look into buying new sheets for your bed. =)
It is nothing to worry about, she is just experiencing a rush of hormones for the first time. My weimie would even pee in her sleep during the 4th week. Just dont let her around any male dogs, no matter how big or small, cuz they will mate, and i dont think you want any pitbull/rottie/weiner dogs running around... Welcome to parenting 101! Just look on the bright side, you wont have to discuss the birds and the bees with her, and its not monthly like in humans, just every 6. If you have no intentions on breeding her, in about a month or so (after she is out of heat) have her fixed. She will live longer and be healthier if you do.. not to mention save you on buying new sheets!

I think you needed to do more research before becoming a dog owner. How did you get her from a shelter and she isn't fixed? Yes dogs go into heat. It can last for a month and occur twice a year. Fix her, and do it quick. If you dont plan on breeding then no need to go through the trouble of the heat.

Where is she bleeding? I presume she is on heat? Get her to a vet if she is. The rescue orginisation should have spayed he. Shame, get someone that can advise you as to how best to handle a dominant dog. Calm down and don't let her scare you. Good luck

yes dogs can have peridos just like every other female mammel in this world
now getting her spayed is a very complicated process
you have to wait till she's had her period, wait for her mormones to clam down and all this other stuff
i think you have to wait like six weeks till you can get her spayed
just take her to the vet and ask them they'll know and they'll talk you through the process. surely you have insurance on your dog?
if you dont get it now!
coz i think insurance can pay for operations
but in future when you are getting a dog be careful what gender you get and if you do get a girl make sure it's gonna/already has been spayed.
coz the blood makes a big mess everywhere

If you decide that your dog is really having a period, which all female dogs do unless they are spayed, I can tell you what my sister did with her dog....this can help save the rugs until you can get her fixed. They took an old pair of underwear and cut a hole for the tail. Then they inserted a maxi pad and put the underwear on the dog. They had to change the pad, but the dog became very accustomed to this and you could tell she felt very special when she had her underwear on.............it worked for years!

Firstly, is your dog bleeding from her vulva? If she is it just means that she is on heat, you can expect her to bleed for about 2 wks, keep her away from male dogs for at least 4wks, to be safe. You do know what a vulva is? Ask your gf if you don't..,.

I guess you must be in America as you can't possible have that cross breed in UK? How come your question is in the Ireland and UK site??? Pitballs are not a legal under the dangerous dogs act. Who in the right mind would breed a Pitball and a Rottweiler? How irresponsible... Talk about LETHAL WEAPON. God, I sincerely hope you know what you are doing and can train this lethal beast? Good luck.. rather you than me.
