done: In a way you can do this now. If you post a question with a link in it which a serious visiter will click on. Consider all those questions posted about "Govt blew up the Towers" videos that linked to You Tube.
I am really sitting on the fence with this one. A meaningful counter also keeps track of who visited so multiple visits do not get registered by the same person. This can be a little intimidating for those whom have a paranoia of big brother.
How long do you keep the counter active? Do you count forever or just when the question is open? Do you display the results to all or hide it so only the poster sees it?
To limit the number of questions that have a counter would you as a poster pay to have a counter placed on your question? Would you pay money or would you pay a higher point cost (say 100 points to post) to add a counter to your question. I pose this as a means to limit the number of questions which have a counter as this would IMHO limit the resources needed to implement the counter system.
Do you place a special icon on the screen to notify users of the presence of a counter before they click on the question.
And finally the ultimate big brother paranoia. "What makes you think that they aren't already counting and tracking our views?"

Would be interesting to know, I have only failed to give one best answer, but like to read all answers I get, because people have taken time to answer, and I find most of which are very thoughtful and helpful.
I was told we have 3 points for awarding best answer.
But of course you mean actually read the question and not answer, still suppose it would be interesting to see how many read your question, but some of course would not bother and just click at random to gain points.
Sometimes folks do not even read question correctly, but most do. I must admit I miss the point sometimes, that is probably why I have only been awarded about 25 best answers, having gone to such efforts to try and answer. 25 is not many, since I have answered about 400 questions.
But I know that there are many good answers to compete with. Not that I am competing or that points matter that much.
I think there are far more important things going on such as see below link.

allow me the luxury of quoting myself, with the same earlier question
Absolutely
now that is one of the most sensible suggestions i have seen ,in while ,after all the ---is Global warming a fairy tale questions.
And of course i have supported your suggestion.
at least then we know if we are talking to ourselves and a few enemies.and some friends or if there is a larger public out there who just read with out participating,
which is really the most important from an educational point of view.
Now we are completely in the dark as to who actually reads our babbles ,
it would be encouraging ,or disheartening to find out ,
maybe they should leave their address as well so we can punch a few on the nose ,OR KISS THEM OF COURSE
this remark was in jest everybody
do not take this seriously ,i am NOT RESPONSIBLE .

Actually, I don't much care how many read my questions, I'm more interested in how many answer them, and usually wind up wishing that half of them hadn't tried.
