Hello,

I have a Nissan Micra Gx, 1997 make. I bought it second hand (or rather fourth hand); so don’t know the history. When I put in the key, this indicator symbol (on the right side of the dashboard, with a picture of what looks like gearbox or engine and the word “check” written inside it) on dashboard turns on. Note that the indicator symbol turns off when I START the car and remains off while the engine is started. I don’t even know whether it’s really a problem or I am simply a paranoid. I don’t have the car manual to understand what that particular indicator means.

So far the car has not given any problems except that I can’t change the transmissions (gear) very fluently. The meter reads 110,000 miles. I don’t know when the gear box oil was changed as I bought the car recently and the previous owner doesn’t know about it either.

Do you think that the gearbox oil needs to be changed given the description above? Help in this regard will be highly appreciated.

TIA.

It is the Check Engine Light for the emission controls.Comes on when you turn the key on just to show you the bulb for the light is working. If it's not on while driving there's no problem.

The symbol you are referring about is for the engine. It's normal if you turn the key into the ON position and should go out after you start it. If the light indicator has another light that says CHECK separately, check the engine, but if the light and the word works as one, that's OK.
If your car has that mileage, if you have the money, replace ALL the fluids of the car. And do other checks and replace if necessary...

When you turn the key to the "on" position, the electronics are working, including the sensors. Since your engine isn't running, the oil pressure indicator is reading zero pressure and a warning light will light up on the dash. When you go start the car, the oil pressure sensor will sense that there is an acceptable oil pressure and the light will turn off.
Perfectly normal. Nothing to be alarmed about.

Malfunction Indicator Light "Check Engine light" if it stays on there is a problem. And if a worse problem like engine mis-fire occurs the MIL will flash indicating theres a emissions problem that can ruin other expensive emission controls. Like the exhaust cat converter.

Could be a fault in the hazard warning circuit. If it happens again it would be best to get it seen to. Either a Nissan dealer or a good auto electrician would be a wise course. Might just be a dodgy hazard warning switch (the switch on the dash with a red triangle on it). Try switching it off and on a couple of times in case it is dust or damp in it.
