Some military surplus stores sell geiger counters.

There are also science supply places ... the kinds of places that science labs buy their stuff from.

Not all such places sell all relevant products to general non-science sonsumers.

Academia libraries would have how to operate the equipment and interpret the results, for book learning folks, in reference books you probably would not be able to take home with you. Some academic libraries limit access to people who are actually students at those institutions.
