I don't.

Why would you assume that everyone here is a few cookies short in the jar?

I very rarely ask God to do something for me or give me something, as God is not my servant, AND most of the things I might want and ask for are materialistic desires not worth praying for anyway. Most often I just want to know God's will for me.

On the occasion that I do ask God for something, I put the question out there, but I also stipulate that I'm not expecting a positive answer. The main thing to remember when I ask for something is that I only want it if it is God's will that I have it. In any case if I do ask for something specific I almost always receive an answer of some kind.

Most of my prayer consists talking to God the way I would talk to a therapist: candidly pouring my thoughts and feelings out. Either that, or expressing gratitude.

Much like I would ask a wise person for guidance. I've learned some of the things I pray for will not be changed but instead I was blessed with understanding why they won't. Don't get me wrong, I believe in prayer so when you pray and beseech God ask for whatever it is you need to and be patient. I believe you will receive and answer.

I just talk to him. I don't think God would like it if I tried to pretend a holier than thou attitude or to pretend anything I'm not, so I talk to him as I would anyone else I respected. He made me. He'd know if I was being false or real, so I just try to be real and talk. Silently to myself or out loud, it doesn't matter. I think he hears it all and understands.

BTW, this might sound crazy, but God did answer me once in a voice I heard and felt. It was weird, but I was going through a hard time and praying for guidance. I kept asking him to do something specific for me, but when I stopped asking for what I wanted and asked him what my purpose was, he answered. Hasn't happened since, but it strengthened my belief as I'm not the kind to hear things that aren't there. But he did give me what I needed when I needed it, even if it wasn't what I wanted. So now I just try to ask him what direction he wants me to go in and hope he puts the answer out there for me to follow.

The Empty Chair

A man's daughter had asked the local minister to come and pray with her terminally ill father. When the minister arrived, he found the man lying in bed with his head propped up on two pillows. An empty chair sat beside his bed. The minister assumed that the old fellow had been informed of his visit.

"I guess you were expecting me," he said. "No, who are you?" said the father. The minister told him and then remarked, "I saw the empty chair, and I just figured you knew I was going to show up."

"Oh yeah, the chair," said the bedridden man. "Would you mind closing the door?" Puzzled, the minister shut the door.

"I have never told anyone this, not even my daughter," said the man. "But, all of my life I have never known how to pray. At church I used to hear the preacher talk about prayer, but it went right over my head. And, I figured that God don’t care much about nobody like me, no way. So, I never really tried it," the old man continued, "until one day four years ago my best friend said to me, "Johnny, prayer is just a simple matter of having a conversation with God. Here is what I suggest. Sit down in a chair, place an empty chair in front of you, and in faith pretend that God Himself is in that chair. Don’t be nervous or afraid though, because God says to us, 'Be not afraid.’ Then just speak to Him in the same way you're doing with me right now."

"So, I tried it. And, I've liked it so much that I do it a couple of hours every day. I'm careful though. If my daughter ever saw me talking to an empty chair, she'd either have a nervous breakdown, or send me off to the funny farm."

The minister was deeply moved by the story, and encouraged the old man to continue to pray in this manner. Then he prayed with him, and returned to the church. Two nights later the daughter called to tell the minister that her father had died that afternoon.

"Did he die in peace?" he asked.

"I think so. When I left the house about two o'clock, he called me over to his bedside, told me that he loved me, and then he kissed me on the cheek. When I got back from the store an hour later, he had passed away. But, there was something quite strange about his death. Apparently, just before Daddy died, he had rolled over and rested his head on the seat of that empty chair beside his bed. That’s exactly how I found him. Can you make anything of that?"

The minister wiped a tear from his eye, then nodded his head and said softly, "Yes’m, I reckon I can."

Jenny, I talk to God like He is sitting with me in my room.

Since age 18 I have had a relationship with Jesus Christ. I have put Him in charge of my life, spiritually. Jesus made a way for me to be right with God. Since I'm at peace with God and I know He loves me and has good plans for my life, I can just talk to God like He's my perfect, good Father.

I tell God about my needs, hopes, fears problems. I also thank Him for all His help. I ask Him to help people around me, like you. I know He wants to help people who are open to Him.

I read the Bible and study it so I understand God and how His kingdom works. The bible is wonderful, but it takes some getting used to when you start to learn it.

I also spend time being quiet and listening for God to answer me. He speaks quietly, gently, truthfully to me. And actually He is even funny at times. He doesn't always answer the way I want when I ask Him for something, BUT, He does always answer - Yes, No, Maybe later, Are You kidding...., Wait and Trust Me.

This is a very good question. Enjoy communicating with God, He's excited that you are interested!!!

I try not to pray for "something." I try to remember to pray for Gods will. Maybe what I think I should be praying for isn't what is best for me?

While one want to pray God it is a request to Him to fulfill a particular desire. But God is supposed to know which desire is to be fulfilled to whom. How then one wants to pray God while he knows what is to be fulfilled? Does it mean that a particular desire was forgotten by Him (which is impossible)? If it is not a prayer to fulfill a desire and still you want to pray God it is nothing but putting yourself in the moral track. Such type of prayer you can do in any manner with politeness.

"Most Holy Trinity,Father,Son, and Holy Spirit,i adore you profoundly, and i offer you the most precious body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifference by which he himself is offended and by the infinite merits of his most sacred heart and the immaculate heart of Mary,i beg of you, conversion of poor sinners."

This Prayer is not for personal needs but for the whole world. The conversion of sinners is what God desperately wants, and it is only through prayer and sacrifices that this can be achieved.

God knows your needs before you ask but He likes to have a conversation with His children. So just talk to him. Remember though he sometimes answers no or not now.
