While clothes and toiletries are good, also bring things to remind you of home.
Photos, your personal choice in music and maybe a little religious reminder if you are the person to appreciate it.

When you arrive in January it will be cold, depending on where in the states you go to, and unless you come from an area where there is snow you can not imagine how cold will be in the snow. So bring the warmest gear you can get and prepare to buy a warm winter coat as soon as you arrive.
(Unless you go to one of the warm areas in the USA, like Florida, and even then it might seem cold to you coming from a warm India.)

And prepare to spend more money than you think you need, as prices will be higher than you expect.

Leave the bombs at home. Just Kidding LOL!!!

Clothes, cash, passport, your US visa, maybe a set of contacts you can reach when you get to your destination. Just to name a few

passport with US Visa stamped in it. few clothes and do your best to avoid bringing things that are questionable in immigration.
