The only "how" we have is in Genesis 12: "The Lord said to Abram [he was not yet called Abraham], 'Go forth from your native land and from your father's house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those that bless you, and curse those that curse you; and all the families of the earth shall bless themselves by you." We don't have any record that Abram hesitated or showed fear; the next verse simply says, "Abram went forth as the Lord had commanded him". Jewish tradition teaches that God asked every other nation on earth before he asked Abram/Abraham; Abram/Abraham was simply the one who said "yes."
The story of the binding of Isaac comes quite a few years later, after God had already made his promise to Abram, renamed him "Abraham, and Abraham's son Ishmael had been born.

God tested Abraham's faithfulness by asking him to offer his son (Isaac) as a sacrifice to Him. He was afraid, but trusted God and took Isaac to a mountain to offer him. As he tied him on the altar and prepared to kill him, however, God spoke to Abraham telling him to instead sacrifice the ram that He provided. (Genesis chapter 22)

God recognized Abraham for his great faith - for faith is the only thing that pleases God. God wanted to see if this man of great faith would sacrifice his one and only son. He wanted to try his faith. Why? Because God knew He was going to sacrifice HIS OWN ONE AND ONLY SON one day. And He wanted JESUS to be be born of a family of great faith. Want to get on God's "A-list"? Be faithful.
