I know the man is long dead and buried, so this is obviously a hypothetical question.
So what would St. Nicholas say or think, if he knew that he has been substituted for Santa Claus, a marketing ploy?

I was at the mall with my 6 year old niece and she wanted to go say hi to Santa. She went up to him with the biggest smile. The Santa was a really good one and really nice. She told him what she wanted. He asked her if she had been good. There wasnt anyone in line so she got to chat with Santa for several minutes. She was beaming the whole time.
I think St Nicholas would be thrilled that his memory is making children soooo happy.

The feast of Holy Nicholas is coming up on December 6th. He would be very disappointed, but also quite happy that the ideas he fostered have become so big. He would be sad that the poor are ignored, but happy that people are trying to give and share. Considering he was an ascetic, he would probably have been troubled by all the weight gain, especially since he didn't get to enjoy the food that gave the weight. All gain, no benefit, he probably would be unhappy with that part.

St Nicholas lived in the 300s AD, as Latin was becoming the common language of the church (and the Roman Empire) replacing Greek. In Latin, his name would be written as "Sante Claus".

I think that he'd be happy as long as people kept giving to the poor. After all, isn't that what he was all about, feeding poor children
