There are modern air conditioning units that do not use a motor-driven compressor.

These are known as 'absorption refrigeration' units.
Typical units in the U.S. use a propane or natural gas fuel burner as the energy source. One common refrigerant fluid is ammonia.

Other energy sources could be used, but propane is the convenient fuel for these applications.

A web search for 'absorption air conditioner' should yield plenty of options for further investigation.

The ancient Egyptians used damp clothes. Wind passed through and cooled the room. Greenhouses use the same concept by wetting cardboard and using a fan to circulate. If you had a method of drawing air through a house by using windows and placing a wet cloth in one window it would lower the temp some.
