I'm planning on getting my master's degree in architecture from the University of Washington and was wondering about the cost of life in New York City? Architects have to go through about 3 years of pain internship after graduating from school in order to become licensed, but interns only make about $40k/year. Would this be enough for me to live and work in NYC? Why or why not? What would everyday life be like?

As a general rule, you must make 40-45 times a month's rent to lease (80-90 times for a guarantor). Studios range from about 1200-2000 in Manhattan, depending on the area. I live in the East Village and pay 1700 a month for a small studio. It would be cheaper to get a roommate. If you have a guarantor, I think you could do it for a few years as long as you know you won't be living in the best conditions. look at the other boroughs too, rent gets cheaper the farther you get from the city.

Wow. I'm 12 years old and i live in New York. Trust me, it's expensive but worth it. I live in a beautiful brownstone thats about 1 millions $ + I think $1,000 should help enough. There are plenty of nice apartments around, depending on what area you depend on satying near/at. Also, while in new york, pick up the Amsterdam News, or Daily News Paper, plenty of ppl will be looking for tenants. And or selling an apartment :] hope this helped

Earning $40K you would need a roomate to live in the boroughs. As far as everyday life, look at it this way, you would have plenty more options to pick from to do the things you would like to do. NYC is a city of choices.

Get a roommate, and try to find one rich friend. Seriously tho 40/k probably in next to not so good parts, and you'd really be struggling. Get a roommate, since you're from out of state, live in manhattan for while. I say that because most of the people there are from out of state, you won't feel so lost. Then try the other boroughs.

yea...40k would be ok. I lived in the city last summer making $400 a week and living in a closet sized dorm, it was not so great. If you get roommates, take the subway, and find a place to live that's not in one of the super expensive areas, you should be ok...

not sure about NY, but you would barely make it on your own in San Diego, CA... good luck with everything :)
