My friend vaguely remembers reading a book in which a character speaks only in famous quotes. She also says there may have been a cork tree somehow seriously involved in the plot. Also it was probably set in a mental hospital. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Here's one suggestion -- "Seventy Times Seven" by Salvatore Sapienza -- in which a 27 year old gay man who is also a member of the Catholic clergy wonders if his sexuality, including his fondness for gay bars, can coexist with his faith. There are quotes from the Bible interspersed with lyrics. by Prince and Madonna. Hope this helps.
