I've never heard of anyone finding a cat skeleton in a tree.

"to avoid starvation" is the obvious answer. Even if a cat refuses to come down from a tree, after a couple of days it will become weak and will probably fall anyway. Then it gets up and finds food horefully with a lesson learnt.

How many dead cats have you seen around the bottom of a tree. If they don't come down where do they go?

Get a lengthy rope and a basket. Throw the rope over a branch close to the cat. Tie one end of the rope to the basket, and carry the different end. Borrow your neighbour's rottweiler. position the rottweiler contained in the basket. Pull the rope. I wager the cat will be down that tree earlier you are able to say 'right here Kitty'.

Because a cat would rather eat your food and be fussed over than starve to death in a tree.

Or maybe you just have a suicidal cat.

They may not come down if they are kittens, especially. They can't see very well yet and they are afraid of heights.
