I see that the Yanks have tried to sneak past out parliament with a request to site their defence missiles in North Yorkshire, thus making us a target, surely as the cold war is over this should be refused and all other Yankee bases closed.

Remember 9-1-1 I think that you will find that you only sent troops to Europe after the tide had been turned against the Germans and it was safe for you to come over and be the great saviour of Europe. Actually your government has continued to charge Britain, and only Britain, for help during the WW2 all the rest of Europe was aided with money we spent on arms and other supplies paid to you. So don't come the saviour of the world with me. You also were bombed into the Pacific war and would have sat on your hands until the Germans were in Washington.

Firstly we're a target any-way.

Secondly the Missile shield will protect us from any incoming threats.

Thirdly no missiles have been based at Menworth Hill, nor will they be, Menworth Hill is an early warning radar station, all the Americans did was request that the radar be upgraded to fit in with the new ABM system.

Wow, thanks conranger1! That was some good insight from a UK point of view!

Sir, have you ever heard of "Eagle Squadrons" it is a group of American men that *volunteered* to go and fly with the Royal Air Force before the United States joined WW2? And Amazingly, it is a Royal Air Force Unit.

Yanks, Yanks, Yanks, thats all I hear from you! What kind of justification do you have to say that "our" US installations within the UK should be closed. The US Air Force only operates two installations within the UK. RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath (which amazingly both have large RAF presence). Anywhere else we are in the UK is a completely RAF operated installation with US presence, similar to several United States installations with UK presence.

"Sneaking" missiles into Menworth Hill? Do you know anything about NATO? Why would the US threaten a strong alliance to sneak missiles in the UK. All of the US controlled missiles have been seen and accounted for by RAF Personnel.

And before you go off talking about all the US communication equipment near Menworth Hill, look up SETI.

There was no case of sneaking any missiles anywhere, the cold war might be over against the old Soviet Union, but the new Russia under Putinism needs to be watched.

You have no idea how the Allied Forces of N.A.T.O. work example: there are still British Troops in Germany.

Your grasp of the real details of America's part in WW2 is appalling, but thats the result of a Labour Party Education System.

Great Britain was being helped with war material and supplies from the very start of WW2 by America, they did not demand any cash up front for it either.

Look up "Liberty Ships" for some interesting info. And the fact that Neutral U.S. vessels were being torpedoed by the Nazis in the Atlantic and inside US territorial waters before the U.S. joined the war.

Part of the colossal war debt to the U.S.A.was party paid by the agreement between the U.K. (long before you were born troll) for U.S. bases to be set up and maintained in the U.K.

So your little anti-US rant falls flat on its face.

You and others like you would do well to thank America for their help in WW1 & WW2, because they had no reason to help the U.K. at all, but they freely chose to do so, only for their help, YOU get the right to sit on your a r s e and post such crap thinly disguised as a question!!!

I am a Brit and I for one prefer the US presence as one of the posts on here talking about new Russia under Putin you really think this crazy country isn't going to course us trouble in the future! There is going to be big trouble when China and Russia start asserting themselves even more and I will feel a lot safer knowing the US is there to back us up. You Americans most Brits appreciate our relationship.

The UK US war debts where paid off in 2006, see link.

The base is Menwith Hill is a RAF base not US. I dont believe the missiles will actually be in the UK and this site along with one in Greenland is simply the radar detection.

Personally I dont mind and would be happy if it was at the bottom of my garden.

Don't forget that we are an ally to you, If not our closest ally. Also, the world Oh So Quickly judges us Yanks on our military actions. We are begged to assist when people need help, and then when it is over, we are no longer needed. We will even help and "enemy" country if a major natural disaster occurrs. Don't forget us saving the world in WWI and WWII. Also, look at YOUR countries history of war (Any country) and our history of war doesn't even compare to the evil that has been done.

Obviously Brits and Americans go hand in hand which p*sses the rest of Europe off no end! Brits can't refuse Americans anything - without them the 2nd World War would have turned out differently ..... yeah right!
Greece got rid of all American bases - but UK is so far up the backside of US it's unlikely that the bases will be removed.

Muslim attack? Why is this happening? Could be the fault of the American 'fight against terrorism' which has actually awoken a whole new batch of terrorism - did the UK/US not expect retaliation for attacking a country that has done nothing/or according to research was no threat to the USA?

Please Ameriucans do the rest of the world a great favour and get rid of Bush!

Future wars? Americans are causing them - not preventing them!

pgb- why should I 'mind my own business?' and nobody else - as a Brit (who had family die in WW2 and friends and family in Iraq) am I not allowed to answer? Why am I targeted? I have as much right to answer as you do (or anyone else taking part in answers)!

Let's see if I've got all this straight --- you Limeys (..if you can call us 'Yankees' it should be all right to call you 'Limeys'..) first gave us the privilege of bailing you out during WWII -- a privilege that cost us dearly in Yank lives and Yank money. Then along came the big bad Soviet Union and you extended our privileged status by 'allowing' us to stick around and help defend your homeland and the rest of Europe at still another immense outlay of Yankee dollars. Ask yourself sometime what England would be like today if we hadn't been around.

But now, with WWII long over and the Soviet Union a thing of the past, Yankee presence there becomes a threat. You even seem to be implying that it's England that was doing *us* a favor by allowing us to hang around as long as you did.

Of course I'm just an uncouth, uncultured, unwashed ruffian from the states which might be why I fail to understand the logic behind your rant. You guys aren't *still* angry with us because of our revolution and the War of 1812, are you?

Cold War is over?????

The Brits and Americans have benefited greatly from out alliance. We have defeated Hitler and beaten the Soviet Union. Now we face yet another enemy; the Islamofascists.

All along the way the grass-eaters have assured us the best way to deal with our enemies is to surrender and appease. But fortunately for the rest of us Reagan, Thatcher, Churchill and like minded leaders and citizens won the day over the Chamberlains.

Thanks to clear headed people on both sides of the pond the world is still a safe place and there really can be peace in our time.

If you want to surrender, move to Spain. Even the French have had enough and are not going to take it anymore.

We are not all bad people...trust me...we just have a crappy president. Can't say I blame you much though...if the tables were turned I am sure you would see so many people over here complaing about British military bases in our country. Personally I love Great Britian and it's people a great deal.
