Today my pastor set me as a leader of a cell group. I was shocked because my pastor knows all of my faults. She knows I've been smoking for 2 years. She also knows about my parents getting remarried, which has been depressing me lately. Right now I know I'm a hypocrite, I am your typical hypocritical Christian, and I don't feel like I can lead people when I have so many faults. I know every person, and every Christian has their faults, but I doubt myself. She tried to encourage me, but I don't know if I can hold this leader position. I don't know if I should decline this position or not, and I'm wondering what I should do.

I'm not even implying that Christians are any better then other people. I respect all religions and I have nothing against any religion. Don't misunderstand what I'm writing.

My friend this happened for a very good reason. Instead of forming a conclusion I would do my best to seek out the reason from the God that you recognize as your God.

This is something you should really pray about. If your pastor knows about your faults and still has set you as a leader, then maybe there is a lesson for you to learn in this project. Small group sessions can be a real bonding of brothers and sisters in faith and amazing things can happen. None of us are perfect and God knows our hearts. He will give you an answer about this matter. We had a small group leader's wife in almost the same boat as you. She smokes and her parents divorced too. This stuff came out in small group and we were able to pray for her and encourage her in a great way. She is so much stronger now for having opened her home and heart to us. I will pray for you as well. God bless.

I have to admit up front that I'm not a Christian so maybe you don't want to take what I say very seriously. 8^)

But obviously your pastor has faith in you. You don't have to be perfect, NOBODY is perfect. The best you can do is to know your failings, your limitations. She knows you won't be a hypocrite and say '_I_ never sin, the rest of you are sinners!'

I think you should go for it! The responsibility will be good for you. I think its people like you, people who know their faults, people who've dealt with their own failings, who make the best leaders, because you've 'been there, done that' and you understand about it. And if you do okay, maybe it will help you to have more confidence in yourself!

Good luck!

First of all, you need to go to God in prayer and tell Him just what you told us. Ask for His guidance. Mos t Christians feel humble and not sure if they are the right ones for doing Gods work. If you let God guide you, you can do any thing. I am not a very good public speaker. And I was chose to lead the Wednesdays night services. That meant that I had to teach people who had been a Christian a lot longer then I had. And I didn't think I could do it either. So I prayed about it. I was waiting for an answer, when a teaching idea came to my mind. At first I did not see it for what it was. God was giving me the lesson to teach. And when I got up in front of all those people, God helped me through it. Just have faith in God. He will guide you.

Pray to God for strength and guidance. There are plenty of good christians that smoke. I'm interested where in the bible smoking mentioned let alone mentioned as a bad thing. If you look at the 12 apostles they were all a bunch of monkeys. they had tax collectors, fishermen, laborers, they fought amongst themselves about who was the "greatest", and in general were pretty stupid a lot of the time. They were not anywhere close to perfect, but God used them to change the world and he could use you too.

I am believing that you have receive Jesus in your heart.
Do you know what it means to be right with God?
It is having a personal loving relationship with Him
When you see someone that needs help you give them a hand.
The defenition of a hypocrite is if you would say It is terrible to have sex before marriage. And tell the people not to do it.And you were doing it.Do you know why you are not a hypocrite?
IF YOU WERE A HYPOCRITE YOU WOULD NOT BE TELLING THE ENTIRE WORLD RIGHT NOW THAT YOU HAVE FAULTS>YOU WOULD SAY GOD MOVED ME UP INTO A HIGHER POSITION BECAUSE I AM SO GOOD.

Um, Moses had a speech impediment, and actually tried to use it to get out of his assigned duties. It actually got God angry at him. I suggest you work with God to dump the faults you can (like quitting the smoking), start a plan for dealing with the rest, and get yourself out onto the playing field and into the game. Bench warming is not an option, faults not withstanding.

She is giving you a chance to turn your life around and help others. She must see potential in you or she would not have asked you to do it. This is a Christ like thing. Jesus did things that people questioned but he never questioned weather he should do them or not. Now it is up to you. Maybe your pastor just did a Christ like thing, are you going to question her or be like Christ and at least try to do what she asks of you? It is your choice now.

This is the problem with blood drinking religions. They go around filling the heads of normal people with garbage about their faults and depravity, so you actually BELIEVE you are flawed. Its a crock of crap.

Don't listen to the blood cult, you are not depraved, you sound like a NORMAL person.

Jesus put Peter in leadership after he denied Him three times! You're in good company! Just be open about your faults as you have been on this site. You may be more effective than you realize. Maybe God sees more potential in you than you see in yourself. I think He's that way with most of His leaders.

You sound like you believe strongly in God, or at least your Pastor thinks you do. If this is the case, then perhaps you should pray for an answer? If it is a "cover" for something, then just drop the gig.. it's not you.
