If you are in the USA, try VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org) and Idealist (http://www.idealist.org). These are two sites that list volunteering opportunities for nonprofit organizations.
You can also call the United Way, and tell them you would like to volunteer, but you aren't sure where to find a list of legitimate nonprofit organizations in your area. They can help as well.
You need to present yourself very differently than you did in this post to YahooAnswers -- you need to be well-spoken, confident, and ready to help -- NOT desperate.

every time you do an internet search, use goodsearch.com
you can pick any charity you want (currently mine is set to donate to Books for Africa), basically every charity is available, and every time you search, a penny will be donated to the cause of your choice. It may not sound like a lot, but all those searches add up.
To further up your donations, don't type internet adresses into the bar at the top of your browser, instead type it into the goodsearch box
it'll get you to the exact same place but you'll be donating money at the same time

For my opinion I think before you go far places to help, why don't you start on your own neighborhood. I mean maybe there are families there in your area that needs help financially, socially and I think it is better to help those much closer to us then go outward from there. But in case you really want to help try looking into the third world countries, they really need people to help.
I'm from the Philippines and the truth is I'm broke right now, you can help me if you want. Just joking.

Go do a google search or look in your local phone book for an animal shelter. They could always use the help, whether it be cleaning cages, feeding animals, or just giving the animals attention.

It depends on where you live.
And some charitys like for people to be over eighteen.
There are to many places for you to count that you could help but there is one that fits for everyone.
