exams only test your memory NOTHING else. i don't care what anyone else says, becuase in all my exams (i just finished mine for school) they had topics that we either did ONCE in ONE lesson or something we done last year and didn't cover this year. they always leave out the stuff that you know well. like math problem's you might know how to do instead of making ones that you know how to work out (even if it takes time) they put pages and pages of ones half the people in my class don't even remember learning. exams are stupid!

What kind of knowledge?
An exam can be an excellent way of demonstrating some kinds of knowledge, but the exam must be carefully designed so that what you are being asked to do on the exam actually requires that you demonstrate the skill being assessed.

Often when exams are given, no such thought is put into how the exam works. Actual performance and portfolio assessments may be far more accurate for demonstrating some types of skills.

If I want to know whether you can cook, I don't really care what you WRITE on a test. I'd ask you to cook to demonstrate your skill.

A good test does.
Any that ask open ended questions that require an essay answer. This shows not just your retention of facts, but your understanding of the context they are in. It also allows you to demonstrate your ability to reason from those facts.
Unfortunately about 30-40 years ago someone invented an answer sheet covered with little circles that could be graded by a computer. That is, if the question was true-false, or multiple choice.
Since then tests seem geared more toward mindless recitation of facts, than toward any actual thinking.

Exams have been used for a long time, and are pretty much a proven way of doing things, although of course there are faults. I think much of the purpose in the exam is to make people study beforehand, as this is where much of the real learning will take place. Plus, any method of finding out how much someone knows is going to need you to prove yourself, which will obviously involve stress, etc.

It's one effective way, but there are others and exams aren't the best indicators for those who don't perform well when they are anxious.

I think the only way exams help is when the teacher hands them back after it is marked and we are able to see our mistakes. I definitley learn more when i get to see what i've done wrong.

You gotta learn from your mistakes

exam can test your memorization skills, but knowledge is truly put to the test when you really need it. creating something, for example.
