Leah, I respect Calderon. I don't 'like' everything he does, but remembering that he is the President of Mexico, and doesn't require US to like him, I respect what he is doing for his country.
I don't like the idea of giving Blackhawk helicoptors and military training etc because he can't be everywhere and while there is LESS corruption in his military than in his police force, there is way too much to make me comfortable. Our military support plans like that tend to come back to have us fighting our own training and weapons. Look at the Zetas.
But absolutely, his progress and Mexico's stability has benefits that will impact us. Yes, I think we should help. I just don't like what Bush calls 'help'.

When Mexico really does change it's ways and policies... then I will have a response. This is just propaganda hype, and nothing more.
Mexico is still expecting and demanding that America, and American tax dollars fix it's country, instead of the Mexican government, and their own money to fix Mexico themselves.
Oh and in my area of the States in which I live... I understand that demand for drugs is still high, but we who have zero tolerance of the drugs, the drug dealers, and the gangs have put quite the strain on them by turning them in, and prosecuting them. So when Calderon says that America needs to slow the demands, or curb the demands so that he can look good is BS. If Calderon just curbs the making of the drugs, the shipping in of the drugs, and such, then it effects who can get the stuff, and how harder it will be for them to do so in this country. He needs to crack down on the makers, and suppliers, as well as stopping it from coming into his country, and then allowing it to cross into ours.

YOu realize the first article indicates that there will be no increase in revenue. Oil prooduction is dropping fast in Mexico, and the tax increase is only to make up the shortfall. Mexico had plenty of tax money before, but squandered it on Baseball stadiums rather than more schools. Most of the article is nothing new. Mexico always offered a small amount to placate Americans, while not truely reforming the system. Reform is done by leaps not by tiny steps.

That is like putting a band-aid on an amputation.
I never trust the NY Slimes or the Washington Post, liberal propaganda machines.
I am all for Mexico bettering their country but is just one step needed in solving America's illegal immigration problem.
