I'm trying to become a cop. It's what I want and I haven't been happier since I made the decision. Anyways, I had my interview with the psychologist and it was going really well in the beginning and then took an ugly turn. By the time he had asked me how much I had to drink the last time I did drink I was frustrated and upset because it didn't feel like it was going well at all. The point is, I lied and said one instead of two glasses of wine and didn't stop myself or correct myself. I have my interview and polygraph with the background and recruitment department coming up and I'm now curious to whether I have ruined any chance I had and went through all of this for nothing. And if you can't tell, I'm really stressed and nervous about this and afraid I have ruined my chances over something stupid and petty. So I'm just wondering how bad it is.

i think you should just confess and tell them that you had two drinks, and was nervous to tell the truth because you thought it would hurt you dream. if they say anything against that, you need to speak your heart out and tell them how much you want this job and that you would take it serious and cut off the drinking if you got the job.

I'm no expert at polygraphs, but my guess is that your nervousness could foul the test. You know, people often tell "white lies" like yours about having two drinks instead of one -- and it's usually the result of concentrating on what you want in a situation where you want something from the other, rather than what you have to offer. It's "natural", but is one facet that interviewers (and prospective girlfriends or boyfriends) sense almost right away.

If I was in your situation, I would go into my next interview, and AFTER the formalities of introductions when things have settled down, I would ask the interviewer if it's be OK to ask a question before you begin the actual exam. If he says yes, then tell him exactly what you are worried about -- that you said you'd had one drink the last time when it was actually two. Just that -- don't go overboard apologizing. His reaction will give you the cue as to what to say next, if anything. Everyone makes mistakes -- it's part of being a "rookie". But your honesty and conscience should put you in good stead, and just as important, let you feel at ease during the rest of the process.

Best of luck and props for your enthusiasm.

I think it would depend on what this polygraph shows. Like was it normal and then you flubbed the drink answer and suddenly the thing started scribbling off the scale?

The difference between one glass and two glasses isn't what I would call earth shattering.

Here's what you could call earth shattering. I recently visited a friend in Des Moines over a weekend and on Friday I drank about 8 beers. Then on Saturday I drank about 5 red bull and vodkas. That's me kind of remembering. I could be wrong. i'm not sure... I can say this... I haven't had a drink since I got back from Des Moines.

Good luck with the cop thing!

I wouldn't think that would ruin your chance for the job if the rest of it went okay. If anything is brought up regarding that, just say you were starting to get nervous over how you were doing and goofed up. I'm sure there's a bit of leeway for little things. Those psych tests are goofy, asking the same question 8 different ways, etc. Good Luck!!!

It doesn't seem that bad.
It probably won't go that bad.
It wouldv'e been worse if you lied on the polygraph, rather
than the verbal interview.
Just relax, and try not to over analyse the whole situation,
and you'll be fine.
Just stay calm, and be perepared and ready for the polygraph.
It something does come up wrong, try again, don't beat yourself up!
you'll make it as long as you try!
Good Luck!

Just go in with confidence and ********* like you already have the job. You got farther than 90% of the people who want to be a police officer. If it comes up about the drink, which I don't think it will, just say you must have been mistaken and let it go. I think you'll be fine!

you're screwed, no just kidding, you'll be fine, a difference of one or two drinks wont hurt you, now if you said one glass of wine, but really meant 10 shots of whiskey in an hour, then you might be looking at problems
