You have to give yourself a little time to grieve, it's a process that just has to happen. It's very sad, but if at all possible tell them goodbye and pet them before you bury them or whatever. I am very sorry for your loss. I know how heart breaking losing a best friend can be. I was still crying when I bought a kitten to replace a pet I had just lost. It definitely helped the pain to see this rambunctious new kitten wheeling about and flying everywhere. Remember dying is a natural process of life that we all must face and it should not be feared. It is my personal belief that, because all living things utilize electricity and electricity cannot be destroyed, that we are all immortal in a way and that we will have many more chances to make things right. Your cat will always be with you and one day, you will see him or her again.

My heartfelt sympathy to you on the loss of your kitty.

Give yourself time to grieve this loss, especially if you had this cat for a long time. Write poetry, make a special place for kitty in your home or garden, make a photo or memory album. Reminisce the good times and let those memories make you smile.

I would wait for a little while before getting a new kitty. Do you have a shelter or rescue in your area that you could volunteer with? If you do, you could spend some time with the animals you love, but not become emotionally attached until you find 'the one'.

Here are some websites for pet loss.

Purrs and prayers to you.

When one of my cats died I didn't know what I should do either. I still wanted an animal to love and care for, but I felt almost guilty doing it. Like, I was only buying a kitten to replace my other cat. You will know when the time is right to buy one. I waited 2-3months before I bought a new one. I made sure that I really wanted another one and didn't do it just because I wanted to make myself feel better. But, you will know when the time is right for you to get one. Everyone is different, if you feel you can do it and are ready to love another animal, then go for it! You know what you want and you shouldn't feel guilty about getting another one either. :)

I agree with above posters about the whole checking to make sure how the other one died to make sure your home doesn't support it happening again.

Second, take a little time and grieve. Then think more on it.

Third, do NOT get a new cat to replace the old one. Don't even get one that's roughly the same color if possible (unless you have a breed fetish). It's just a path for disappointment for you and the animal.

If you get one, get one because you like cats. Don't get one because you liked your old cats. They are like people and have different personalities. You have to acknowledge that.

Do what i did if this is the best for you... wait a little while like a month or two... then go cat hunting, im sure you will find the right one. But you also dont want to get one that reminds you of your old cat this will make the "gettin over the cat stage" harder.

oh i am so sorry. i know that's hard to deal with. I think for now you need to mourn your cat and maybe wait a bit to get a new one. In the mean time why don't you go volunteer at the local no kill shelter or humane society!! They have cats (and dogs) that can use a little extra love. That might help you feel a little better.

I know what you mean. You want another one to keep you company, but you feel its crule in their memory. What I would suggest doing is talking to your local shelter. Most shelters have a progan called fostering, where you get a pregnant mother cat and she has her kittens in your house, then when the kittens are old enough, they can go to new homes. That way you're helping them and you shouldn't feel guilty. If you want you can adopt one of the kittens if you feel that's what you want. I can't really tell you if you should get a new one or not, as that is your decision completely, but fostering would help make the decision alot easier.

I think you should get a new kitty when you're ready to. Remember you can't replace them but you can feel a little better by loving another one. There are so many cats in shelters that need a good home.

Do you know what it died from? Some diseases can stay in your home for a few months - it might be better to wait if you are afraid of that.

My ferret (which are treated like cats at the vet) got distemper and they told me to wait 6 months before bringing another into the home to be safe.

cats have 9 lives! get another one if you really liked having a cat and be sure to take extra good care of it. take it to the vet regularly and don't declaw it if it's going to be an outdoor kitty. that way it will be able to climb trees, fences, etc. to get away from other animals like dogs.
