He may have had a touch of senility when he did that.

Some would say this, yet the majority of Muslims share beliefs that are much more in accord with Catholicism that are those of the Jews, or many protestant groups.
Maybe the Pope was simply a good and brilliant fellow who was unafraid to make bold, provocative gestures ... even at the risk of sometimes being misunderstood ... kind of like Jesus ... when he dined with sinners ... or when he stood against those who wanted to stone the adulterous woman.

According to the following eyewitness, in 1999, the Pope kissed the Koran as a sign that he has also great respect for Islam and that he was aware of the suffering of the Iraqi people.
The Chaldean Patriarch of Iraq, Raphael I Bidawid is the spiritual guide of the majority of Iraq's one million Christians -- who still celebrate their liturgy in Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus.
Raphael I Bidawid, Patriarch of the Chaldeans told in an interview:
“On May 14th I was received by the Pope, together with a delegation composed of the Shiite imam of Khadum mosque and the Sunni President of the council of administration of the Iraqi Islamic Bank. At the end of the audience the Pope bowed to the Muslim holy book the Koran presented to him by the delegation and he kissed it as a sign of respect. The photo of that gesture has been shown repeatedly on Iraqi television and it demonstrates that the Pope is not only aware of the suffering of the Iraqi people, he has also great respect for Islam.”

It is simple. His doing it to demonstrate the love, brotherhood, and forgiveness that Jesus say you should show even for your enemy. Instead of trying to convert people by force and brainwashing, the Pope was showing the world what true goodness is about, peace, tolerance, and acceptance. Works way better than sending suicide bombers or invading other countries for made-up reasons.

I cannot judge His Holiness about his actions, but perhaps he was trying in his own way to propagate peace.
P.S. People are posting senility, etc., but the Pope is a politician who showed respect that there are other religions in the world. There are many roads to God.

Perhaps he knows that the name of Jesus is written in there and is worthy of respect. The power in the name of Jesus is far beyond the reasoning of many men. God's word will not return to him empty.
Even in the text of the Koran that name will reach out and overcome.

After all Quran states only good things about prophet Jesus (PBUH), his mother saint Mary, and the family of Imran, there's even a whole surat named "Mariam" = Mary in Arabic, and another surat named "Al Imran"

He's probably not a heretic, he's probably a wise man who wants to demonstrate love, tolerance, good will, and respect.
