Thanksgiving is a holiday our family celebrate every year, but this time it was very emotional and tragic for us. Morning of Thanksgiving my father-in-law had a heart attack. It was a surprise to everyone. I mean he has no health problems at all. He's 56 years old and healthy as can be... We just don't know what happened. I am married to his oldest son and he is not taking it so well. Well the whole family too. As a daughter-in-law I'm trying to keep them strong and let them know there's hope. As of right now he's in the ICU for about 3 days now and it's like a 50/50 % chance he can still survive from this. I'm praying and hoping that he will come home soon to his family. The only thing the nurses and doctors been telling us, is that they are not really sure to what caused this. So, today they had ask us for permisson to take fluid from the spinal cord in his back. This is a really big descision to think about, but if anyone knows of similiar incidents please write me a answer. Thanks.

Hi saMMY,
I do feel for you and your family. My boyfriend last March 17th, 2007 had a major heartattack also. It was 5am in the morning. And he woke up with chest pains.I tried to talk him into going to the hospital. But it took him an hour later, before he decided to. Not only did he have a heartattack, but he was without oxygen for a few minutes.(he is onlly 61yrs. old)
And the things they kept telling us, it was worse than it actually was.........And his medical............he's still triing to get it, He can't work any more......Just start triing to get him on medical, and disablity..........I hope and pray that your father-in-law comes through it ok.........shyra

I am very sure the doctor will tell you answers when he gets them. They are still testing which means they don't have the answer yet.The first test is a blood test which will confirm it was a heart attack. The second test I had was an angiogram to see if the attack was caused by blockages in the blood vessels that feed the heart muscle. They found many blockages and attempted to unblock them with a procedure called angioplasty. This failed so I had to have open heart surgery to bypass the blockages.I suspect this test(angiogram) did not show the cause of his heart attack so they keep testing till they get answers.I did NOT have a spinal tap test when I had the heart attack.Allow them to do all the necessary tests they have to so they can know the cause so they can treat it.Spinal taps are usually done when they are looking for some kind of viruses that can cause heart attacks. He is in the best place, they won't let him die if they can help him.Thank God he survived a heart attack to get treatment. Because you say he was in good health and only 56yrs.old chances are really good he will survive this.I was 54 yrs. old and was back to work in 3 mos. This is a real scary time now but having a heart attack and NOT DYING right away is a good thing. Now they can fix him.

It sounds very much as though they are trying to rule out as many potential causes as possible, but it is surprising that they didn't tell you why they wanted the spinal fluid sample. It sounds as though they suspect something, but need to spinal fluid to confirm it - or rule it out - but the person who needs to answer your question is the doctor who ordered the test.
Bless you for your concern and the help you are giving your husband and his family.

He may have been ignoring the signs, possibly attributing them to indigestion: men are notorious for this. I can't advise you in this matter, apart to let you know that he should always keep aspirin on him, in future, and take a dose at the first sign of a recurrance. He should eat in accordance with his "nutritional type" as shown at http://www.mercola.com TASKBAR and take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily.
