My dog runs away every chance he gets. He is always happy to see us when we find him, but gets out again. We have always found him, until today. He's been gone for 14 hours and it is cold tonight. I'm really worried and not sure what to do next.
We have reported him to the police and animal control. He unfortunately lost his name tag that last time he got out and I have not replaced it yet ( it was yesterday). But his rabies tag is still on his collar.
We have gone out driving and walking on and off all day.
Before you ask, my yard is fenced and he learned to climb the fence. I have tied him in the yard, he has broken the rope. I need to get chain to use, but it is costly - also I am afraid he will hurt himself.
At wits end- any suggestions?

He is neutered, he was adopted from a family that had an electric fence that he just ran through (which I didn't know until after adoption), and he lives in the house!
And we found him!!!! The police had him but did not check descriptions of missing dogs- go figure! And he is microchipped but to his original owner that won't be bothered to change the info.

At this point, the only thing you can do is keep him inside when you can't be out to watch him.. The hard part is, they get addicted to escape.. It's not that he wants to leave, but they get addicted to the adrenaline rush they get while escaping..
More then likely, someone caught him and may turn him into animal control when it opens on Monday.. I would keep driving around though, but otherwise, that's about all you can do..
My parents had a dog that kept escaping, they could never break him of it, nor did they keep him in and eventually someone killed him.. The only thing I've seen work is an electric fence in addition to a regular fence.. That way he doesn't have a chance to plot escape as he starts getting static'd when he gets within a few feet of the fence.. One of those with the buried line works the best, but, only with another fence too..
You may also want to have him microchipped so that even if his tag is missing, animal control can quickly locate you..
My dog would be an escape artist if she wasn't inside all the time..

I hope you find your pet. I know it would just kill me if I lost one of mine.
It sounds like you don't have a lot of money to spend on the fencing BUT do you want to lose your dog?
We have had the "invisible fence" system (with 4 dogs) for years and I would never be without it. They cannot dig under it and get "zapped" if they try to cross it. If you were to go to your local pet store (there are many commercial ones available now) you could pick one up and run it just inside the actual fence. If the dog's receiving collar is on...they cannot dig under or climb/jump over without consequence. They learn quickly.
It is NOT inhumane...just needs to be properly trained. We moved from one house to another and retrained our dogs to the boundaries. Not once have I lost a dog! We do not even have a "physical fence" to restrain them. If you want more info, you can e-mail me at chance_lady_sammy@sympatico.ca
No...I do not sell the product.....I am only trying to help in case you want more info on how it works.
Good luck....hope the dog is ok.

I have 2 dogs - a brother and sister who had been together since birth. I adopted them at the same time. At the time, the rescue worker said it was best to adopt 2 at the same time if you were going to be gone all day because dogs need socialization, interaction and a playmate. I was nervous adopting 2 at the same time but it ended up being the best decision ever. They really look out for each other and play together when I can't be with them.
I would suggest you get another dog to keep the other company. Your dog is running away because he lacks stimulation, attention and play. When he hears something or someone he thinks will play with him, he runs. If he had a playmate to keep him company, he would be much more likely to actually LIKE staying in his yard.

Electric wire along the top of the fence should keep him from going over the top.
Has he been neutered?
If you don't spend enough time with him, he may be lonesome and bored. Dogs like to have human companionship. Maybe you should keep him in and take him out for exercise on a leash.

If he isn't neutered, that would be the first step.
Some people have tried the shock collars or citronella collars for this kind of thing; not sure how well they would work for you.
Another thing you might want to do is have him microchipped - The HomeAgain company has a great service for helping people locate their pets if they become lost.

Zipline at the top of the fence. That way you don't have to tie him. You can buy a zip-line at any farm supply store.
Also, try getting the dog more exercise.

getting him neutered may help, if he isnt already..
make sure to get him microchipped!!!! that way if he dose get out and to animal control, they can scan him and let you know. also vets can scan the dog too.
make sure he gets a lot of exercise daily!! he seems like he wants to run a lot.
good luck and hope you find him!!
