I just bought a new sony dcr sr42 camera. i am about to plug it in to charge for the first time. I am afraid that if i leave it in the outlet too long, i will over charge and hurt the battery.

But basically, is it okay for me to leave it plugged into the wall for a long amount of time?

Battery chargers put out a fixed voltage, but the current decreases as the battery approaches full charge. At full charge, there's almost no current going through the battery itself (although there's a little bit in the charger, which keeps it warm). No need to worry about overcharging it - you can leave it in overnight if you have to.

There is no way to overcharge a battery, batteries have a chip integrated that when it reaches full charge it automatically stops from overcharging. So you can leave connected for as long as you want and nothing will happen. It's prefferable to charge batteries until they are completely out of charge, that would make your battery's life last longer.
