Why do so many people continue to insist on hating certain animals rather than educting themselves and fighting the real villans in this world. Is it just easier to hate a dog than it is to actually come up with ways to change the people on the other side of the leash. I guess it is... but where is the gratification in that. Does it make anyone feel better to have a breed of dog irradicated rather than to educate and take a stand against cruelty? Does it really make anyone feel intellegent to be led around by the media rather than dig for the truth? Isn't there times when the harder road is more gratifying than the well worn path?
I was just working on my BSL page and thought that I should share my thoughts and questions with you (mostly) good people as well.

People are nasty in general. We still have problems with race in this country. We won't let people of the same sex marry. Anything that varies from a narrow definition of "normal" and acceptable tends to throw the masses into fits and they want that "thing" near them. It doesn't matter if it's a person of a different skin color, race, sexual preference and now it's a dog.

It's so much easier to jump on a bandwagon of fear and hype than to do a little research into dogs and understand BSL is bound to fail. If we selectively get rid of one breed - Let's pick one.... (Say Labradors rather than the pits. More labs bite anyway and I'm a lab owner...)
Eventually we will have to move on to the next vicious breed of biters - and that will be yorkies next.

It's a fact that the more popular the breed, the more of the breed in the marketplace. Thus the more of that breed that bite.

However, the media skews the reports of bites/attacks. But if we are going to TRULY implement BSL, we have to systematically eleminate the biters. So, no more labs. Then no more Yorkies.... then I think in popularity, Golden retrievers may still be #3. They will be banned next.

There will always be a dog breed to take the place of the "devil dog" that is at the top of the hit list.

In my hypothetical situation, I said lab. In reality, it's the Pit now. In my lifetime, I've seen it be Dobies, Shepherds and Rotties as just the "worst" dogs ever. I'm hoping the pit hysteria will pass but I fear for the next breed that gets to the top of the list.

People are sheep - or lemmings. It's sad. I don't know why most won't think for themselves. Maybe when it is the Lab or Yorkie at the top of the list, they will.

Great question and thanks for all the work you are doing. True dog advocates love them all...

=)

Thanks for sharing...I have seen these videos before and have to agree...people stereotype and assume that all breeds such as the pit bull are bad dogs. I, myself, haven't met a mean pit bull...and the ones I've met are owned by families with children. I get very defensive when people talk as "they are all like this" ...I mean, I even have to defend my breed, the cocker spaniel. When I tell people I own cockers, they immediately respond with "aren't they bad with kids?" The answer is no..those stories they have heard about cockers are from poorly bred, unsocialized dogs...not because of what breed they are. I totally agree that banning specific breeds is wrong....taking a loving dog from a home is unfair just because he is a certain breed. If the dog has done no harm, he should be left alone. The one video is right...man is ignorant....what man fears...they destroy. It's so wrong.

Breed bans are RIDICULOUS! They only lead to further problems. Unfortunately the media has chosen to make a big deal out of this issue and for the "uneducated masses" this makes a huge impact. For the responsible dog owners, it makes life miserable.
Are there bad dogs out there? The answer is "yes"...although not of their own choosing but of the choosing of their owners....Some dogs (regardless of breed) have been so badly abused or trained that they are not salvageable (I am SURE I am going to get flack over this statement). While I truly believe in the possibility of rehabilitation for most dogs, some just can't be saved. More is the pity. It is not the dog's fault but the owner's.......I could go on for weeks about this but I have made my point.

Sorry could only look at first video. I love this breed and seeing them like this just rips my heart out. People are so afraid, ignorant and cruel sometimes I see no end. But at the same time I know by educating people raising examples of this and other like breeds will help. It all starts with the owners. I feel it is up to us as owners to show the real picture of these dogs. Laws help with sending people to jail for cruelty and abuse. But in the end we have to make our dogs stand out above the rest as well behaved trained, socialized and loyal breeds.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is my favorite dog breed. I have worked with so many of them, I KNOW that people who hate Pit Bulls have never actually met one in person. A few may have had maybe one bad experience, and refuse to give them a second chance. I have a rescued American Pit Bull Terrier, and I am very proud of her, and I show her off to everyone. She is such a sweet heart. Showing people in person what a Real American Pit Bull Terrier is all about is the first step towards changing their minds. I know we have changed quite a few people's minds, and it has even led to some people I know rescuing a Pit Bull of their own. And thank you for posting those videos. The first one made me cry, the third one is on my myspace page, and the last one made me smile.

No animal ban has ever worked, even people in CA still own ferrets, look at exotics bans caused more suffering, a Ban doesn't eradicate anything it just causes shaddy people to profit more, and for good people to pay the price. Governments like bans because it means they don't have to inspect or regulate-less time and money for them. Bans are bad, its so funny that anyone supports breed bans because dog fighting is already illegal, yet it's next to impossible to convict someone for it unless they walk into a dog fight, I have seen guys reclaim dogs covered in bite wounds. I work at a shelter and from what I have seen less than .1% of people even fight dogs, most people own pits because they are cool looking, people friendly, and the most common dog out there since they are considered "mixes"

I read the question, then i read the answers the others posted, and I agree with them. One breed of dog is not any worse than another breed, but if you should get a dog who has been bred to fight( such as pit bulls) then you need to know how to teach such dogs manners. Many people dont see the faults they are creating until someone much smarter than them shows them how to teach such dogs. i just picked one breed as an explanation, I am not against pits per se, because i knew a person who taught his pit to be very well behaved. he told me how he trained the dog from a puppy.
I agree with one person on here, especially. We need to ban some humans from owning dogs. I live in a neighborhood right now that the owners of these dogs dont know how to teach them manners. The owners have just about gotten me to be a dog hater, just because of the people who has them( I hope you know what I mean.) I use to own a dog myself, but after these people moved in with their ill mannered dogs( they are ill mannered themselves) I quit owning dogs.

I live 15 minutes outside of Ohio which is almost completely affected by BSL, and having a Rottweiler I have already made the choice that if it affected my town I would definetly move. It is ignorant people, not vicious dogs that hurt people.

I think it's easier for some people to hate. It's easier than trying to spend the time to learn. People tend to take the easy way out. It's easier to hate than to go thru the work it takes to learn and find out on their own. You know that because of the questions asked her sometimes.. Probably 95% of the questions asked can be answered with ' Google it ' People won't / don't spend the time it takes to find out the truth. They are happy with lies and it's easier.

I love pits and all bully breeds. I grew up, with my parents telling me that pits were bad...than i started to volunteer at my local animal shelter, and I fall in love with every one of them!!!! Its sad when people dislike pits, because they are one of the best breeds of dogs out there! I own two of them myself, and they wouldn't hurt a fly. But because of the media, they get a bad rep, also the lack of educating people about the breed.. hopefully we can change this, before they ban them all!! thanks for loving and help saving pits!
