As far as the Navy goes they not only teach fire safety, they teach you how to fight fires. All of that training requirement derives from the experience of USS Franklin, an aircraft carrier during World War Two. She was badly damaged and on fire after attacks by kamikaze aircraft from Japan's Special Attack Squadrons. But, the crew battle valiantly and saved the ship. She was towed to Pearl Harbor and later to the mainland for repairs.
Fire and fog are two of the great perils of life on the sea.

Oh, yes.
And there is this extra training, called " fire watch." It's exactly that! you watch the building to make sure it doen't burn down. (At 3 am, after a hard day of training, you couldn't give a damn if the whole state burned down.)
