Someone answered with this statement (this is just part of the answer) in regards to another question and it got me thinking because I have had this question many times.

"Christians really do have NO idea(she was talking about how persecuted atheists are I think here) Or any original ones."

Why does anyone think their ideas are original? Why does anyone think their ideas and beliefs, or lack of beliefs, arent influenced by others around them?

Everything we learn has been taught and figured out by someone else before us. We have all been influenced by other peoples ideas and philosophies. Is there really any original thoughts anymore? Hasnt someone else thought of it before?

I believe a person can be open minded and a free thinker, in terms of deciding for themselves, but that doesnt mean that their ideas are original and it doesnt mean that if someone comes to a different conclusion that the other person isnt a free thinker or open minded.

If you answer that there are original ideas or thoughts that noone else has ever thought of in the history of this world then would you please like to enlighten us as to what some of these are.

It wasnt the redundancy of the questions on here I was asking about, it was the response to that one question. She was pretty much bashing on christians claiming they didnt have any original ideas. I just didnt understand why she thought her atheist ideas were any more original than christian ideas.

The point that we connect these unoriginal thoughts and ideas into our own individual perspective is a good one. That does make it more personal.

Great question! Consider this: Even if all ideas are influenced in some way by others' previous ideas, is it possible that each of us, as a unique individual, has the potential for contemplating and/or connecting these ideas from our own unique perspective? This process would then yield new ideas, in the form of APPLICATIONS, which leads to new perspectives, concepts, and applications. I believe it would have to be this way; otherwise, technological development would have come to standstill long ago.

Perhaps in the field of philosophy, abstract thought, religion and psychiatry there are no original thoughts. I do not believe the same applies to the inventor, the researcher or the tinkerer. There must have been a need for the product, the medicine, the surgical proceedure or invention which initiated the thought. From the thought an idea was formulated which developed the thing which was needed.

I think it's more that some people blindly follow religions. For example, maybe a person's parents are Roman Catholic, so they consider themselves Roman Catholic too, without even putting thought into what they're believing. With athiests being the present minority, it is far less likely that someone was "taught" to be athiest, than they actually put thought into it and came to the conclusion that there are no gods.
It's not the fact that they created the idea, so much as they consciously chose to believe it and are not just submitting to dogmas.

Well you have to understand that the world is a big place. It is not like people know what the person in the other side of the world is thinking of, right? Therefore, understandings and ideas come in different levels, so let people be curious about redundant questions. Who know? If you help contribute to their questions, they might build up on it with more and more curiosity and research, thus resulting in a new discovery. It's not like new ideas and beliefs breed like mice everyday. They are more like building blocks, where one is placed, we should analyze it first before placing the other one, lest all the effort in learning is lost. Only a few geniuses in the world, like Einstein, could come up with brilliant theories from the root of his mind. Our development comes in different levels, so understand that our unsatiable hunger to know will eventually lead to further understandings and discoveries.

For the most part, you're right. But if NO ONE ever had an original idea, mankind would never advance past the point we are at this given time. So, it is possible to have an original idea if you try hard enough.

Human arrogance makes many think their thoughts are original. Yet many do not try to find original thoughts or we would have new inventions, Movies, forms of entertainment etc. Rather than people trying to "reinvent the wheel"!

Because "there is no new thing under the sun."

The thing that hath been, it [is that] which shall be; and that which is done [is] that which shall be done: and [there is] no new [thing] under the sun.
