It's going to sound weird, but when I was in high school I would curl the sides of my hair up by scotch taping the wet ends in a curl to my cheeks. It worked pretty well, and would work for bangs too. The hair needs to be wet, you curve it into place and use a piece of tape to hold it there to dry.

while my hair is wet I curl them and pin down and then just do whatever around the house to let the hair dry up.
once I release the way it was pinned, the hair has a natural wave or curl - depending how tight I rolled and pinned it.
So the hair looks nice with bounce. Plus use a hair polisher while wet and before rolling hair.

by sideways, are you meaning sweeping over your forehead? If so, blow dry in the directions soaking until damp, them in the opposite direction, go back and forth until they're completely dry, and you've finished in the direction you want them.
