Did you know that a lithium ion battery dies just as fast if it's unused and sitting in its package than one that is being used and recharged?
In other words, if you buy a spare battery, it will be dead in its package (you won't be able to charge it) by the time your current battery stops keeping a charge.
Never buy a spare rechargeable battery unless you plan on actively using it as a backup.

I have a fairly new Kodak P712 digital camera, and I've found that the Li-ion battery tends to discharge over about two week's time, whether it's in or out of the camera. I would suggest getting a backup battery, and the wall charger, which I have. My wall charger will accept any input A/C voltage from 100 to 240, so it's good for foreign countries if you travel (but you'll need a plug adapter for most). Try to plan ahead when you're going to take pics, and charge the batteries the day before. I also bought a couple of 2gb memory cards. Be sure before using the camera to go through the menu and select the memory card as the location for storing your photos as you take them.

If you plan to go on holidays, and extra battery would be a good idea. Especially since you need a computer to charge the camera. If your just going to be using the camera around the house etc. Just charge the battery after each use. Li-ion or Lithium-ion batteries are so good they can be recharged an almost unlimited amount of times without losing capacity.

Buy the charger and an extra battery.Battery life depends on what type of shooting you are doing. If it is a still object then of course the battery will last longer. If you are trying to capture a certain moment or event then your battery draws more power by being on constantly.

The cheapest digital camera I'd recommend is the Fujifilm Finepix F10, which is about $120 if you get a good deal. It uses lithium ion batteries. I recommend it because of its 1/1.7" sensor.

If you want to keep a standby battery, it depends on your need. If you want to take photos more than the battery time you can have one but one charged battery is good enough for a 1 mega bite memory card.
