changing the route of my map?

On Yahoo Maps,I asked for a map to a place I'll be visiting,but I want to take a different route to it than the route Yahoo Maps charts for me. I've traced it out before so I know the roads exist,but would like my map to show this alternate route so I'll have the mileage breakdowns and more exact locations of the turnoffs. Is this something I can change?

I am not sure about yahoo maps, I use google maps.
But if I find that I want a different route, I often break my journey request in a place that is just on the route I want to take, not the one the computer advices.

I have seen that you can change the route in Google maps, but I have not used that option yet.
