Precorded laughter fills the ear as wire and wireless scripts
prompt listeners and viewers to share a chortle at every last remotely funny circumstance. Is it needed? Should wit bring its own reward and can't we let bad script die silently?

i could not agree with you more!!! unfortunately i feel some of
the programs we view on television are so bad, people
responsible for the canned laughter may feel it is neccessary.
thats just my opinion.

It is definately not needed. If the script were funny to begin with and if they had faith in the script and the show they wouldn't use it. If a show can't stand on it's own then it is not a good show. I hope canned laughter is someday canned.

I say no prerecorded laughter.
That's how you know if a show or performance is good. If no one laughs at a funny part, then observe whether the audience is just quiet or if it wasn't funny. Trust me. If it's some type of TV show, I can't really say. But if I had to, I'd say no again.
I guess in short, I agree with you!

The laugh box's can be real annoying sometimes even in the funny shows, but at least if your laughing hard so is the prerecorded one so the actors do pause, this way you don't miss what happens because you were to busy laughing

I agree with you, it's not needed, but I think increasingly the better comedy shows are doing away with it, for instance Ricky Gervais's 'The Office' and our Peepshow on Channel 4.
Let us hope that this trend continues. I wonder though if there's still some issue about the value of performance in front of a 'live' audience. Only performers can answer this one!

It works really well at prompting laughter.. the producers want it there so people think their shows are hiilllllllarious. Perhaps more hilarious than they *actually* are. Just a fact of life.

I hate 'canned laughter' as it used to be called.Like we cannot decide for ourselves when to laugh!
