I'm an Officer in the Navy, 38 single and am transferring to Fort Meade, MD next April to work. Trying to figure out which place to move to (heard Annapolis or Baltimore City) ... considering traffic to Fort Meade in the morning and enjoying the night life. I do prefer brownstones and the city life over that of suburban homes (like downtown Manhattan) areas. Appreciate any and all feedback about traffic and where you would live if you had the opportunity to choose somewhere new? Thanks in advance for your help.

Annapolis is going to be very expensive. Baltimore is less expensive in many parts of town, but any cheaper area is going to be less safe than most people would prefer! In either case, you are going to have to commute by car, as there is really no good public transportation that serves Ft Meade. Car insurance rates for vehicles that are parked in the city are much higher than the rates in the suburbs!

If you do decide on Baltimore, check the Federal Hill area. It is a bit nicer than most! Parking is very hard to find! The Fells Point area has some nice homes, and some of the newer ones have garages! Fells Point has many nightlife choices!

The commute from Baltimore to Ft Meade is going to be tough, but not as bad as some. You will be going against the flow of traffic when you are going in, and seeing as you are Navy going to an Army base, I assume you are going to be working in the buildings with all the antennas and satellite dishes. There is a separate exit ramp from southbound 295 (BW Parkway) to that area (No Such Agency)

Welcome to the Peoples Republic of Maryland!

Thank you for your service.

hmm.. Navy, O, Ft Meade.. can we say IWO?!. seriously, wait until you GET here and find out EXACTLY which office you will be in ..NIOC has 4.. you do NOT want to be living in Annapolis if you are going to be working out of Suitland or NSA.

the commute sucks no matter where you are, and if you are like my spouse who often will have meetings at NSA/the Pentagon AND Suitland all on the same day.. well, you can expect to spend several hours a day in traffic.

Also, be prepared to have to wait a couple of months before you get your Clearances straightened out and you actually get into a building. if you can get your poly done before you get here: DO IT!!!!

As others have suggested, Columbia is approximately your terrific guess. Savage, Odenton, or Laurel could desire to no longer be that sturdy anymore. that's definitely a tremendously short shuttle from Columbia to ft. Meade as commutes pass in that section. BTW, $1300 can not get you much.

I would avoid Baltimore at all costs. It is not a pleasant place to live. Annapolis might be more expensive but it's worth it to stay out of Baltimore.
