If you are being put under a general anesthetic, then that is probably the reason for not drinking water. You may have the typical vomiting after anesthesia which with having teeth removed wouldn't be a good situation. I am only guessing here, but it seems to be a sensible reason why that request is being made.

I would imagine you are not supposed to drink before hand because of the anesthesia they would give you if you have an impacted wisdom tooth but that is usually 6 hours not 12 and I know that after the procedure you are not supposed to rinse, spit, or drink with a straw so you don't disrupt the clot forming and get dry socket but perhaps you are not supposed to drink at all so it can begin to heal properly.

As long as you are not bleeding heavily, you should be able to drink water. I had all 4 teeth removed and I ate soft foods for several days. Chicken broth, pudding, jello, etc. You really do not want to eat anything soft that could get caught in the area where the teeth were pulled. It could cause infection.

Really? When I had mine removed I just couldn't drink before the procedure because of the anesthesia. I could drink it afterward, but just not through a straw. The sucking on the straw could damage the stitches and cause more bleeding.

There are 2 types of wisdom tooth extractions, simple and surgical.
It looks like you have been given the surgical instructions. Just ask for the written protocol. This is probably because you need to undergo general anaesthesia.

When you are fully conscious after the procedure, you should be able to drink and eat light foods .......as soon as you are ready of course
