Go Now to the drug store and get cough drops with Zinc in them.
If you take a medication with Zinc in it ... your cold symtoms will not last as long... Promise this works.
There is a medication.. cannot think of the name.. it is a medicine created by a teacher.. (wish I could remember the name) if you take this with 48 hours of first cold symtoms, the cold will be gone quickly. Again this works. I am a teacher and I fight all kinds of germs brought in by my little friends and I take both of these medications and my colds never last as long as most of my friends. If you ask the pharmacist about the cold medicine created by the teacher I am sure they will know the name and direct you to it.
I just went to look in the medicine cabinet hoping I would find some left from my last cold so I could give you the name but no luck. so sorry.
In the mean time ... get your 12 yr. old on vitamin C pills now and pick up some garlic tabs. Garlic is one of natures antibiotics.
Don't forget to have your child gargle with warm salty water before going to bed and again upon arising. This really helps for sore throats/
Good Luck.

I have a recipe... 1 Med - Large lemon cut slit in it and put it in a jar. Add whole cloves. Fill the jar with honey and cover. Let it sit for 24 hours. Take the lemon out, cut in half and squeeze all the juice into the honey. Stir well and put aside. When someone gets the beginnings of a sore throat, heat some water and place 2-3 Tablespoons full into the water. Give this several times a day. Add Ginger to the mixture for another healing aspect against colds.
Another thing I found useful is warm milk with honey before bed (sweats it out of them) or Echinaccea tea is another good thing. Been using all these at one time or other. When they are older, Osha Root tea helps too. Take a piece of root, and steep it in hot water. Strain it and put aside in the fridge. This is a Stock so you need only give 3-4 Tablespoons. in hot water 3 times a day. (this one came from a shaman at an Indian pow wow!)

Gargle with salt water - an old country remedy that really can help, even though it tastes yucky.
Warm beverages, and lots of them, like tea with honey and lemon, which coats the throat and cuts through mucus, even warm water plain is ok.
I always wrap up my throat with a scarf and keep my neck warm for a day or two. That's what a lot of singers do - I don't know why but it does work.

Robitussin DM (or any generic with dextromethorphan) is a good cough suppressant. If they have crud in their chest, get the kind with guaifenisen too (it should be taking with at LEAST 8 ounces of water!!!). There's also a kind that has pseudoephedrine HCL for stuffy noses in addtion; just get the kind that matches the symptoms in question. NO ASPIRIN unless you're sure the child has a bacterial infection; aspirin can cause Reyes Syndrome in children and adolescents.
If it MUST be a home remedy - a shot of whisky works. Burns like hell, and tastes nasty if you're not accustomed to it, but it WORKS. Honey/lemon tea is ok too, but the help doesn't last long.
Hope they're feeling better soon :-)

Vitamin C can't hurt. Zinc lozenges. Throat Coat Tea (it's from Herbal Medicinals, you should be able to buy it at your grocers). DON'T do the lemon and tea trick as that will further irritate the throat and dry it out. Warm cloth over the throat. Steam for the nose, like a nice hot bath. Lots of fluids. I've actually been able to circumvent colds with Vit C and Zinc. Hope they feel better:)
I am an opera singer so that's why I don't go near lemon. It just dries you out more which causes more irritation. That's just my experience.

I use drinking water to rinse out mouth after each warm water and salt gargle,
and after each time using Chloraseptic, sore throat spray, as directed [ for myself [ an adult ], I use baby aspirin, I also use an occasional Vick's cough drop ], and mostly children's tylenol for a child, as directed to ease pain.
I also use Tussin DM Cough Syrup [ non-drowsy, alcohol-free ], if there is any chest congestion to keep loose.
I usually know by the third day, if I need the advice of a doctor.

My remedy is 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 2 parts water.Gargle it 3 times a day. Don't swallow any, spit it out and then rinse with clear water. It tastes kind of bad and foams up but it kills bacteria. Then just a pain reliever (Tylenol etc) and some warm tea with honey.A nice little shot of Nyquil or Tylenol liquid will help with a good nights sleep which is most important.

Gargle with 1/4 tsp salt in a 6 - 8 oz glass of warm water. Keep gargling till it's all gone. Do this often throughout the day.
This shrinks the swelling through osmosis -- like when you sit in a bathtub for a long time, your finger tips get "pickled" because of osmosis.
