I'm a 17 year old girl. I've never had sex before, but I suffer alot from UTI's. I have been getting UTI's since I was 7. I have a urinary tract infection right now. They gave me Azo (which turns my urine orange-y) and they gave me antibiotics called "cephalexin". The doctors aren't sure which antibiotics to give me because when ever I take one, I feel super sick. I pass out, and throw up, and feel plain icky. They tend to switch several antibiotics because they all make me feel bad. I started that antibiotic today and I already feel sick. Why is that? Is that normal? Should I be concerned? Is it normal to have reoccuring infections?

I had a friend that had recurring UTI's. She would drink a lot of cranberry juice to help. If your doc is constantly switching your antibiotics, then he's just trying to figure out what won't make you sick. If he's still giving you antibiotics then you probably aren't allergic, just sensitive. You may not be able to get rid of the UTI's because of your sensitivity to antibiotics! Sorry, just follow your doctors advice!

It's not normal to have recurring UTIs, but there are different reasons it might happen. I hope your doctor has told you about the correct way to wipe yourself, for instance.
If I were you, I would certainly look at taking some alternative treatment and prevention methods. It isn't that unusual for people to feel bad from taking an antibiotic, so I'm not worried about that as such. But if you keep taking antibiotics over and over, your bacteria will develop resistance, and you could develop an allergy.
In my experience, most UTIs will go away if the patient takes 5,000 mg (5 grams) of ascorbic acid vitamin C. This is the cheap kind, and the only kind that works well for this. You can take even more, as long as you don't start getting loose stools from it. If you do, take less.
The excess vitamin C that your body doesn't use, is excreted into the urine. This makes the urine more acidic, and the UTI germs can't stand it. You can take this routinely, even when not sick, and it will prevent UTIs and perhaps other problems as well.
Another thing you might consider is drinking more water. You might consider drinking as much as a half-gallon or gallon a day. This flushes out your bladder and helps dissolve any solids that may be deposited in there. It can't hurt.
I wonder whether you could have crystal deposits in your bladder; this would lead to recurring UTIs. Your MD could diagnose this.

Your body is rejecting antibiotics because it is intelligent and knows the problems they cause with the friendly flora inside you! To clear up your UTI, ask your doctor for Monurol. It is a single dose, bladder specific antibiotic. It is very effective and since it is just ONE dose (one envelope of an orange flavored drink mix), the likelihood of you getting sick is greatly reduced. In addition, since it's a bladder specific antibiotic, it goes to your bladder and stays there for several days without adversely affecting your friendly bacteria the way full courses of antibiotics do.
Most importantly, you must get your kidneys and urinary tract healthy to make sure you don't get another UTI. A chronic problem like yours will take time to heal, but it will. Make sure you are taking a good quality probiotic (such as Primal Defense by Garden of Life) and consuming cultured foods and beverages (kombucha, kimchee, miso, etc) to replace the friendly bacteria that will ward off future infections and enhance digestion. In addition, a supplement called D-Mannose (the active ingredient in cranberry juice) is excellent for restoring the health of the urinary tract. Cranberry juice is too acidifying and usually contains so much sugar that it really won't help you at all. In addition, you would have to drink so much cranberry juice to get the desired effect that it simply doesnt make sense to try to fight off a chronic condition such as this with juice. The D Mannose will help much more and is available at www.mercola.com.

Good Luck!
