...Why are they sold in toy stores?

I've heard some really, really creepy things about Ouija boards: How they "open you up to demons", how they're potentially dangerous, how you should NEVER touch one.

And yet, in an age when products are immediately recalled if they're found to be dangerous or harmful to a child, Ouija boards are still sold. You can get them at Toys 'R' Us and KB Toys, and they've been widely available for years.

If this product is so incredibly dangerous, why can I walk into a toy store and get one for $14.99?

Well, someone should bring that danger to the attention of Toys 'R' Us, if it really exists. I'm just saying, a toy store is an awfully interesting place to sell a product that you "should never, EVER buy", according to some people.

I don't believe in Ouija boards myself, just to be clear. Thanks for all your answers.

Interesting point. It highlights how superstitions and an active and susceptible imagination can be easily influenced, even by something as simple as a toy. And a pretty basic toy at that. Just a board and a plastic pointer with rubber feet.

On the other hand, it's pretty amazing how the mind can construe and manipulate things that we focus on and especially that which we are fearful of and how strongly we can convince ourselves of the substantially of these things.

If people want to walk around being fearful of things they create with their mind, then so be it. But I'd imagine the vast majority has to know better, otherwise sales would decline and the company would cease making the item.

GREED is the root of all evil and that is why they are being sold. Many merchants sell them for the same reason so many people have responded to this question, where there is a widely known controversy, mystery and possibly even danger...there is interest. Where there is an interest on a large scale there is also money to be made on a large scale. Stop and think about how many eyes, ears and even lives have been lost to stray bb's and pellets and how much controversy there is concerning these types of TOYS, yet they are still being sold to the public. And that is not a very good comparison because they at least have warnings on them. The dangers of an OUIJA board are not seen by physical doctors and can not be measured in dollars and cents like the cost of replacing a window,so they LEGALLY are not recognized as being dangerous. While not LEGALLY dangerous, they ARE widely known to be green gold for the merchants due to the reasons named earlier. That is WHY they are being sold. That means people who do not "look before they leap" will have to find out the hard way and hope they do not lose something precious along the way!! I would HIGHLY suggest that people whose curiosity wins out over caution, at least take one simple precaution when the "play" with it and its a simple thing to do. They should say a simple prayer, to whatever higher power they believe in, ie God Jesus Allah Yaweh...whatever,to only let spirits of the white light come thru to speak with you. What harm can it do,especially if it is all nonsense anyways? I read somewheres that it would be far better to believe in god and find out he was NOT real, than to NOT believe and find out he is! GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS YOU ONE AND ALL !!!!

The Ouija board existed for over 100 years before the book (and then movie) The Exorcist came out, and no one claimed they were dangerous. Then the Parker Brothers' made game was used in The Exorcist and all of a sudden people claim it is dangerous. I'd have a lot easier time believing a single one of these claims about the Ouija board if they existed before the author of a horror novel thought it up...or, for example, if they were documented, or if Parker Brothers had ever been SUED. No one who claims the thing is dangerous is willing to put their money where their mouth is.

Hi "Polly!"
You are asking the same I had always wanted to know for years!!!!!! This issue really is a WINNER! well, I used to wonder the same as you, especially when I had an older Brother who turned Religious and tossed our Ouija board into the fireplace and burned it in front of my eyes!!!!!!!!!

Isn't it a strange "twist" though how the thing is sold in toy stores, YET is said to be evil and dangerous to play!

I sure don't know of any evidence that the game is dangerous, in fact I have wondered if it was all rumors about people getting "possessed" using one, all because of the Religious people making a real stir over it!

At one time I believe I even wrote a letter to the Milton-Bradley co. complaining about the claims of their game being "Evil" and they wrote back denying (of course) those claims of Demons, and being dangerous. They just stated that they were making alot of $$$$$$$ from the sales and they weren't about to stop it's production of the game!

I, then left it at that but wondered still over the years about fact or fiction on this subject!!!!!

The Simple Answer Is YES. They Can Be Very Dangerous.
To The Unwary Or Those Who Think It Is A Simple Game. If You Believe It To Be Dangerous, DON'T BUY Or USE ONE!

The Problem Is, Most Of The World Is Deceived By Satan So They Are BLIND To The Spiritual And It's Dangers. So As Long As This Condition Exists, OUJA Boards TAROT Cards WITCHCRAFT Books Etc. Will Be Sold.

BTW, All The 'Thumbs Down' Prove My Point.

What many people claim is not that the Ouija boards themselves are dangerous, but "inviting demons" over and messing with spirits is the danger factor. For example, you could play a game involving inviting spirits into the area, and that would be just as "dangerous". The Ouija board is simply a form of playing with spirits and demons. Supposedly.

When I was younger, I told my mom that a friend had one. She told me that she didn't want me playing with it. I never played with one, not because I am still listening to my mother, but because I haven't seen one in years. Plus the thrill has died, once you get older.

Besides it works by the power of suggestion. A group of people will subconsciously move the pointer to spell out what the group really wants to say. It is more of a psychological game rather than an occult game.

People who call them dangerous also tend to call fiction books and movies dangerous as well! Book burnings anyone? Ouija boards are just something that people subconsciously move themselves. They are not to be taken seriously. Besides, like other fortune telling tools, they are only tools. Any answer they give should only be take as suggestions and not definite because your future depends on how YOU make it, not a board game, card game or the like!

Um, Ouija boards are totally harmless. You get a standard board game board with letters on it, and a little piece of plastic that you push around with your eyes closed. I hope this was a joke!

They're only dangerous if you don't be careful with them. As for demons, I think not. People often mistake the nastier kinds of spirits for demons, but they're nothing of the sort.

Besides, you don't need the Ouija board to get effects similar, any kind of metaphysical portal/hole/whatever can attract astral/spirits that are nasty.
