Particularly Adam and Eve. Why is it called 'the tree of knowledge'? Knowledge is a great thing

Also, sex has many benefits and some cultures or philosophical branches see it as spiritual bonding. I mean sex has great effects on your immune system, hormone activity, weight, etc.
Why is it viewed negatively?

It is the tree of knowledge of good and evil - not just knowledge.

Abt sex.
Sex between a husband and a wife is *encouraged* in Christianity. I have yet to read anything in the bible telling us what positions are permissible, or what time of the day sex is OK, the only thing it really tells us is to not deny sex unless it is mutually agreed upon (for example, withholding sex in order to make him do something is not something we should do)

The trees were in the garden bearing fruit from the beginning and God said it was good. What I believe happened at that tree is not that evil came into to the garden when they ate, but that Adam and Eve's eyes were opened to it. Then, unlike God, they judged what they now could see was always there. They decided Evil is bad and Good is not. (Evil primarily being death.) This good/evil ecology, which is at the heart of the operation of the garden, suddenly is seen from different perspective to A&E. Death is bad, primarily their death. Nothing changed in the garden except how they viewed it. The first evidence of this new perspective is seen in the fig leaves. The first judgment of themselves and each other.

So of course sex with its good and its bad has to be controlled. Get rid of the bad and keep the good. So we must decide what is bad to rid ourselves of it. Carry on the tradition that A&E established for us in the fable we call Genesis.

The tree of the knowledge of good and evil was presented to Adam as an opportunity to seek knowledge apart from God. Adam chose to eat from that tree, and so God bowed out. Now all of us are born with the desire to seek knowledge of good and evil apart from God. We will determine what's good and evil on our own. Then we get in a mess.

What's wrong with sex? Nothing is wrong with it. God created us to enjoy one another that way - but within the boundaries of marriage. When it's used outside of marriage, it results in great harm, most notably with STDs.

Between two members who are married sex is not negative. It becomes negative when used to self satisfy. This leads to hurtful feelings and un-wed mothers and children with out parents. Sex can be very harmful when people sleep around and sex spreads many STD. Sex in proper situations is not negative but very positive and yet in the wrong situations today sex can be deadly.

Sex is NOT viewed prudishly in the Bible at all! The ladies in the Bible knew that size is important to achieve a fuller sexual satisfaction!!!

Ezekiel 23:20 - There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses.

There are many more references on this subject in the Bible, but the Christians resent that this information is released to the untrained public. We can be banned from Yahoo in no time... Christians earn merits before God by restricting any sexual experimentation to enhance the sexual act!!! They seem to get a kick out of it!

I believe it was called the tree of knowledge of good and evil -- and I suppose Adam and Eve weren't supposed to know evil. Though I can't say I agree with the sentiment.

As for sex, Christianity says it is good, but only with your spouse.

I agree with you that Knowledge is a great thing.

I find it interesting that so few of your answerers appear to know the difference between "sex" and "making love".

Sex is animal behavior; making love is Human behavior.

Sex is never viewed negatively in the bible. God just wants us to have sex in the confines of marriage which is a positive thing. Read the Song of Solomon in the Bible. It's a very explicit story of King Solomon and his wife, the Shulamite woman.

the knowledge of good and evil. apparently it wasn't a great thing after death entered the world.

sex is a gift from God. its wonderful gift only to be enjoyed in the bonds of marriage. if anyone thinks different then i guess they don't enjoy sex.

Sex is viewed negatively by many in the church because it can take over your mind and keep you from worshipping God. When kept in it's place (marriage), it is one of the most wonderful gifts God has given us.
