I would like to drive my 4wd VW camper from my home in San Francisco Ca. to England. Driving to the East of Canada is not a problem nor is getting a car ferry from Iceland to Scotland. What I can not find out is how to get me and the van from the East of Canada to Iceland. If there is anyone who can help me with this problem that would be great. Thanks, Shaun.S

I have shipped camper vans to Europe before to both England and Germany where I have used them to travel for a month or two. I know that this will not be inexpensive way to do this but I figure this will be a good adventure and I would love to drive across Iceland on my way to Germany. FYI you are allowed to bring your car over to Europe as a visitor for two months while using your registered state plates on your car though you need to get insurance from the country your in i.e. Iceland when in the EU one countries insurance from the EU is good in the other EU countries
(German insurance covers you in England) Rather then send my van over with a freighter I would like to join it on a ferry so that I can enjoy the ride as well like you would do when crossing the channel from England to Holland or France.

The stretch of ocean that you would cross from the east coast of Canada to Iceland is H U G E ! It would cost you a fortune to get it shipped, possibly more than the vehicle is worth, so consider it carefully.

Once you got to England, your steering wheel would be on the wrong side of the car (they drive on the left) so that could be awkward, perhaps it would be better to fly to those places and rent a car while you are there.

Good Luck!

(Edit: I am wondering if you mean IRELAND - not Iceland. If you were to get your vehicle to Ireland you could easily get to main-land Europe, but going to Iceland would be a waste of time and is not in Europe anyway!)

Get a good running start..... sorry I couldn't resist it. I do know that cars can be shipped to Iceland as a friend of mine in the US Navy took his several years ago, and my brother took his car to Europe a couple of years ago.

OK that's the up side of the adventure the down side is that you just can't ship a vehicle from one place to another my brother and my friend had to have their cars cleaned inside, outside and underneath to make sure that they weren't carrying any soil/bugs with them. Also there is the matter of insurance/road tax/vehicle restrictions. I don't mean to put you off I think it is a GREAT adventure, you'll have to find a shipping company in either Canada or the States that will ship your beastie to Iceland and it is going to cost you major dollars.

My first step would be to check with the Icelandic embassy to see if they have any restrictions on bringing a car into the country.

Good luck on your adventure and take lots of pictures I think you could have a book to write

There is no car ferry between Canada and Iceland. You'd have to put your car into a container and have the container sent to Iceland by cargo ship.

Another option is to ship via container vessel and sail with that vessel. I number of shipping companies will allow paying passengers (international law basically allows up to 12 passengers on a commercial non-passenger vessel).

If you contact a liner/container service direct you could asked if they would allow you onboard as a passenger. It could be an intersting adventure!

theres no ferry between iceland and canada. its way too far, and not enough people would take it for it to be economical.
