Had trauma about 10 years ago where half my tooth was cracked. Could not find it, was replaced with artificial material. Shortly after, I had a root canal. Every now and then there is an underlying infection in the tooth where I must take oral antibiotics.

It appears that this tooth needs to re-treated by an endodontist or extracted if there is an existing fractured root. Taking antibiotics each time the tooth flares up is not the ultimate solution. See an endodontist and have the tooth re-evaluated.

When a dentist does a root canal he drills out the root, which is basically a nerve, and leaves a hollow "canal" where the root was. This is then filled with a substance that hardens in the canal and the tooth is usually crowned. If you're having infections, he probably didn't drill out all of the root. Some roots have branches and maybe he missed one. My suggestion is to go to a dentist that specializes in root canals and have it redone. These guys are specialists and they're not cheap, but they know what they're doing. Good luck. I hate having tooth problems.

Obviously the job was not done correctly, there should be nothing left inside the canal for it to infect. Yes you can have it removed, but to keep the tooth, you would have to have it redone baring in mind that after ten years of the tooth being dead so to speak, it will have become brittle by now, which would render it a fragile procedure. Apart from that, you could have it removed, and if that is your only problem, there is the possibility of having it bridged. The other options are very expensive.

My mother just recently had a root canal redone because of infection and an accident that cracked her tooth. Our dentist said that the root canal had not been done properly the first time (the "packing" had air pockets that led to the infection). You definitely want to speak to your dentist about getting that fixed, it is possible!

they can remove it....then put in a bridge.....
BUT that is not very pleasant either. one of my worst moves was removing a tooth that could have been left in longer. i was in a chair for 3 hours with pain that was 10 times worse than my broken arm was years ago......

you should have had it pulled out the first time root canals are far more expensive than extraction. i had the same option i have no insurance and it cost less that 100 bucks 2 pull it no lie. it took about 5 minutes and no pain pills or infection.';';';';';;';';';pull it out.
