Try using a flea dip instead of the hartz. The flea dip actually works wonders.

Not Hartz!! NOT Hartz. You're right that this product is useless. It has also killed a fair few animals.
NOTHING, repeat nothing, you buy in a pet store is going to kill fleas. They're not licensed to sell the right drugs for flea treatment, so don't even bother.
Get some proper flea treatment from a vets - Frontline, Advantage or Revolution. These actually work, which make them worth the money.

Please don't listen to all the home remedies you are going to get, like Dawn, flea baths, flea collars, etc. They don't work and can make your dog very ill.
The ONLY thing that works all the time is Advantage or Frontline or some such name brand (not Hartz or junk like that) topical liquid applied every single month to the skin on back of the dog's neck -t hat simple.
First, however, you need to get rid of the infestation in your house - wash the dog's bedding, vacuum the rugs and sofa, behind the cushions, etc. - then throw away the bag.
Take your puppy to the vet and get a pill called "Capstar", very cheap, and will get rid of all the fleas on the dog within an hour.
Then you apply Frontline or Advantage and renew it every month - end problem.

give a bath with DAWN dishwashing soap, then use Frontline Plus (24 hours later).....get at your Vet's office. You will need to use Frontline for at least 3 months. Fleas have fallen off the puppy and are in bedding, carpet, etc. Because of the life stages in fleas it will take 3 months. If you have a medium to large breed dog, only buy 1 tube at a time because it goes by the dogs weight.

Hartz sucks. Use a product like advantage or frontline, but first call your vet to make sure its safe to use advantage or frontline if you've recently applied hartz.

Use head lice shampoo, thats what I use when I wash rescued puppies instead of flea shampoo. It works much better.
Head lice shampoo actually has the same exact stuff in it, except head lice shampoo has more, and flea shampoo has more water. When I used to use flea shampoo, I usually had to use it more than once on the same dog/puppy. When I use head lice shampoo, I only need to use it once and the fleas are gone.
