Gandhi and Stephen Hawking agreed on this.

What do you think of this thought?

Does it counter your beliefs? Does it fit snuggly with your beliefs?

Do you think it's a bunch of hooey?

Is it a profound, scientific or even a simple explanation of 'All That Is'?

Please state your system of belief so I understand where you are coming from with your POVs please.

Peace.

I have heard and read that they agree that matter and/or energy never die. Feel free to answer according to what you have heard and/or think. It's just a topic for general discussion and I hope to have many systems of belief represented.

Does anyone correlate this to their beliefs of "birth/new life", "death" (if you believe that everyone goes to heaven or hell), reincarnation? How do your beliefs explain that with this scientific thought in mind? For instance, if you believe that everyone goes to heaven or hell for all eternity, where does new life come from because 'All That Is' is not shrinking.

I placed this in R&S for a reason and I appreciate everyone's input so far. I was hoping some would explain how this validates or contradicts popular beliefs.

mrpride00 might actually be touching on the R&S implications here. Can you expand on your opinion? Not entirely sure I know where you're going with that and I would like to know more of your thoughts in correlating this with R&S beliefs. Thanks.

Death implies life. In general, matter is not alive so how can it die. I think you meant to say that matter cannot be created or destroyed. That's not entirely true. Any time energy is released, matter is destroyed. Any time energy is gained, matter is created. Way back in the early days of modern chemistry, its pioneers noticed that during chemical reactions, the amount of matter present was always the same before and after a reaction. The only thing different was how the atoms were bonded. We still apply this principle in modern chemistry even though we know it's not 100% true. No scale can measure a difference of 1/10^9 of a gram. Nevertheless, to keep things a bit more accurate, we have combined the law of conservation of mass (the one saying matter is cannot be created or destroyed) with the law of conservation of energy into the law of conservation of mass and energy. We express this law quite simply as E=mc^2. Beautiful, isn't it. A simple, elegant, two inch equation that quantifies the energy contained in any sample of matter and demonstrates how matter and energy are interchangeable.

But, this equation is not the whole picture. To call it the summation of all that is would be highly unscientific. The scientific thing to do is to ask how. How is it that energy and matter are interchangeable? Some very brilliant physicists are currently working on this very problem (many with much more talent than Hawking, but lacking an inspiring story such as his heroic struggle with ALS, they tend to go unnoticed).

And as a side note, it doesn't matter who agrees with a fact. It's still a fact. Appealing to authority shows a true lack of scientific intellect.

It seems pretty clear that the matter and energy in the universe started in a singularity and will end in darkness. But science is still looking at this and since I don't have the arrogance of a religious person, I believe that we have not evolved enough to be able to get to the final answers.

I think you are talking about energy that cannot be destroyed. It just changes form.

Matter(mass) can be be converted to energy according to the formula E=mc^2.

I don't see why this basic law of nature (law of conservation of energy) should get anyone's religious knickers in a knot.

Conservation of mass or matter pre-dates both Gandhi and Hawkins. In addition mass can be transformed into energy and vice versa - Einstein, E=MC², early 1900's.

Well, according to scientists, matter cannot be created or destroyed, like you said, and it changes form. This fits with my beliefs, because I am an Atheist. Minerals and nutrients from our bodies feed other forms of life after we die. Our energy fuels life for other organisms.

Additionally, the elements that constitute our bodies are created(changed from ligher elements to heavy elements) by supernovas deep in space.

As salaamu 'alaikym, my freind.

Insha'Allah, matter is not living, although it does exist. As it is not living, it can not die. Neither Pro. Stephen Hawking nor Gandhi made the statement you are referring to in the manner in which you sited it. (Stepehn Hawking is a physicist and such is not taught in physics. Gandhi, was by profession training and education, a lawyer..may be the only honest lawyer who ever lived.)

Insha'Allah, all things that have been created will continue to exist until the Last Day or Day of Judgment at which time all of creation will appeare before Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala, so as to be judged by Him. Alhumdulillah! At that time, decreed and established by Allah (swt) all will be, again, as He decrees they should be and He has not revealed the form of such to us at this time.

Insha'Allah, sicence and general education fit perfectly within the onctext of my faith.

Insha'Allah, I am one who submits to the Will of Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala and folows the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (sallaahu 'alaihi wasallaam).

Ma'a salaam

Albert Einstein proved it mathematically and yes most any scientist and others with an ounce of sense accept this as true to date . If you can disprove it you are the next genius of our times. Peace and Prosperity

It fits perfectly with my beliefs because I believe that this earth was organized, not just poofed out of nothing.

If I even try to begin to comprehend the concept of infinity and eternity my head starts to hurt. I dont think we have the ability at this time to fully understand these concepts. Hopefully one day we will.

Yes. In a sense we are billions of years old, as the particles which constitute our bodies have been around since the beginning of the universe.
