I also remember Ed Koch's reference that it's more like a Salad bowl. For any dish, there has to be a strong ingredient that binds the dish. You can't have one flavour that overwhelms the dish or it would taste bad. You need a proper balnce so the flavour melds well. Unfortuantely when there is too much of one ingredient it over whelms. There is a difference when a culture enriches ours rather than one that over runs. If we have too many of one culture, it could destroy what makes our culture great. We need a proper proportion so we can see the foreign culture and borrow from them , what we consider better than ours. I know longer see LA as a community anymore, because there is few things that binds the ethnic groups.

As you travel in this country, you realize it is. And it is for the better for being a melting pot.

Currently, we are melting pot with a lot of criminal illegal aliens. That is to say, a lot of the illegal aliens coming now made a run for the American Border to escape the long arm of the Mexican Federalies.

But the fact is, I don't want Mexico to decide our Immigration Policy. Congress doesn't listen to us, but if we could get a national referendum in place, we could get around the lobby groups and the enormous amount of money spent by the Mexican Government, and establish a vote on what the people may want.

I live in southern California and it definitely is a melting pot! I love it! I love the fact that I can get any type of food that I want and it will be authentic. And I don't mean taco bell people. I love the fact that I can see all types of people and their cultures! I love different cultures and learning about them. I have picked up some of the languages and it is fun! I know some Armenian words, Punjabi, of course Spanish and a little Italiano. Love it! There is no place like this in the world!

To tell you the truth I never heard that term being applied the United States until I was a freshman in college while I was taking some course I have long since forgotten about. I think it was supposed to imply that the U.S.A. is strong in diversity, which I agree with, even though, Europe is a much older society when compared to the U.S.A.
Diversity is fine as long as its not used by certain politicians to create stress between the races and the classes. I think the U.S.A. can draw strength through being a melting pot in that all people have inalienable rights under the constitution.

No the US is not a melting pot, never has been , never will be. I see it more of a Mosaic, with each little pieces fitting together to form a Mosaic of different people. hopefully with one day having a common purpose.

America is a melting pot as you call it, or a tapestry of different cultures, religions, beliefs, ideas. That is what has made our country great. Notice i used a past tense term. The melting pot has more than a few cracks in it now. We are in trouble. For starters we need to close our borders and allow the immigration process to proceed along the legal provisions that have been in place for years. Otherwise our 'melting pot' will itself, simply melt. In case you havent noticed its already happening we are in deep doodoo on several fronts. Each administration making it worse than the last one.

If you come to Hawaii it's a melting pot of different races.

I feel it's good that people of different races can live in harmony with each other. Yes we do have disputes but we learn to compromise if not we have laws to rely on.

The US used to be more of a melting pot, especially in the late 1800's with the immigrants, the nativists wanted to assimilate them into American culture, adopt the culture and pretty much get rid of their previous culture. Now, it is more of a salad bowl, people from all over with different backgrounds and not really using the American culture, just here for the freedom but still celebrating their cultures and even at times more loyal to their country rather than the US. The salad bowl is more of different cultures within the US rather than the actual US culture.

No melting pot implies that we are all part of one homogeneous culture. USA is more like a boulliabaise

A melting pot is based on assimilation. That is what our country was supposed to be. Now we have multiculturalism, propagated by the bleeding heart libs.

Multiculturalism stinks.
