It must be cool, it's easier to slice when it's on its side, and a long serrated knife is best. A guide can be helpful, but with practice, you don't really need one. Slice an inch thick. Happy eating!

Get a bread knife with a long blade. Use long strokes and almost zero downward pressure. Let the knife do the cutting, don't force it. With practice you won't have any trouble. Early on your sandwiches will be a bit thicker, but that's not so bad.

Get one of those plastic cutting guides to put your loaf in. You can decide how thick you want the bread. Use an electric knife.

A knife with a serrated edge works the best for me. The edge is like a saw.
